The Opportunity:


Reporting to the Manager of Laboratory Services, Quality Systems, and indirectly accountable to the Director of Laboratory Operations and Chief of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, the Lab Standards Coordinator will collaborate and consult with the Laboratory Quality Coordinator, Lab Section Managers, and lab medical and technical staff to plan, implement, and control the administrative and technical functions required for a Quality Management System (OMS).

The Lab Standards Coordinator will be responsible to ensure the Laboratory complies with the accepted set of guidelines and requirements, including developing and maintaining policies and procedures.

They will also be responsible to lead and coordinate internal audits, to identify areas of improvement in collaboration with the Quality Systems team.

The Laboratory Standards Coordinator has a range of accountabilities for quality, and ensuring continuous improvement and excellence in lab services.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitors compliance with quality standards, regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and other components of a quality management system
  • Coordinates preparation for accreditation inspections in collaboration with Quality System team and facilitates follow up on areas identified for improvement.
  • Facilitate and coordinate process control activities, including internal and external audits.
  • Develops and maintains a document control system to ensure time and version sensitive documents are current, supporting division in their documental control requirements.
  • Collaboratively, with Quality System team, evaluate and facilitate improvements to the Quality Management System to ensure its continued effectiveness.
  • With the Lab Quality Coordinator, investigates nonconformities related to lab services to eliminate root cause, and ensures documentation, reporting and follow up are appropriate.
  • Coordinates internal and external quality assessment programs.
  • Coordinates equipment management, including overseeing verification and validation for lab general equipment and maintaining a central master database, in collaboration with Clinical Engineering
  • Develops policies and processes related to contracts, referrals, suppliers, and external and advisory services.
  • Create, oversee and maintain databases required to meet the requirement of the Quality Management System (i.e. Referral Laboratory Accreditation).
  • Offers educational sessions related to quality, medical error and patient safety to lab staff and other lab professionals.
  • Demonstrates commitment to development of professional practice through participation and leadership in organizational and professional activities.

Hours of Work:

Mon. to Fri. - 8am to 4 pm hr/week


Your Qualifications:


  • Registered Medical Lab Technologist (MLT) with 5 years' experience or appropriate degree (e.g. BHSc) with 5 years' experience required.
  • Certification from CSMLS and valid license or exemption from NSCMLT is required.
  • In depth clinical knowledge in one field of laboratory medicine required.
  • Minimum one year experience facilitating quality and/or safety improvement initiatives.
  • Completion of, or commitment to complete, a Quality Management System Program.
  • Completion of, or commitment to complete, a Leadership/ Management Program.
  • Computer skills required (word processing, spreadsheets, etc.) with proficiency in data management preferred.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, excellent organization and technical skills, good decision making skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills (written and oral) required.
