Position Description:


UNIT SUMMARY
***The Laboratory Supervisor in conjunction with the Microbiology Laboratory Manager, Director of Laboratory Services, and Discipline Director for Microbiology is accountable for:
  • participating in the execution of the mission, vision, values and goals of the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP) which are consistent with and support those of St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporations
- coordinating the management of all operational aspects of the Microbiology Laboratory within the Program; the Microbiology Lab includes the Bacteriology / Mycology labs at the HHS Hamilton General site and the Virology / Molecular Microbiology labs at the SJH Charlton site
- providing consultation and interpretation in all testing aspects pertaining to the activity with the Microbiology Laboratory
- facilitating integration and optimum utilization of staff to meet the responsibilities for the microbiology lab at HHS and the virology/molecular microbiology lab at SJHH


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
  • Degree/certificate from a recognized Health Management Program
  • Advanced Registered Technologist or BSc in a related science, Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor of Health Administration preferred
  • Experience in a supervisory role would be an asset
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a Medical Laboratory
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to lead and manage change initiatives in a fastpaced work environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development for self and other staff
  • Experience in meeting financial and quality performance targets would be an asset
  • Demonstrated experience in conflict management
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, coach and mentor staff

RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensures safe and effective services by maintaining and improving performance standards which are determined by professional groups and/or legislation.

Works collaboratively with the Microbiology Lab Manager, Discipline Director, HRLMP Directors and Operational Managers to ensure effective and efficient management of services within the approved resources.

Works collaboratively with the Microbiology Laboratory Manager and staff to achieve the Microbiology operational goals and objectives.
Assists in the investigation and assessment of new technologies and products specific to Microbiology Laboratory.
Responsible for the recruitment, retention, recognition and performance management of staff. Oversees departmental staffing requirements and work schedules ensuring
operational hours are covered.
Ensures financial responsibility through contribution to the budgetary planning, monitoring and controlling of departmental costs.
Monitors effective workflow, address issues and maintain open communication within the laboratory and across the HRLMP.
Fosters a positive environment conducive to team building, collaboration and shared learning. Creates a culture of mutual respect in which team members feel appreciated and their contributions are recognized and valued.
Ensures the provision of a safe and effective work environment.
Performs cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested.
