The Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and Families has the following volunteer opportunities available:

Position:
Health Contact Centre Outreach Volunteer


Start Location: 40 Begbie Street, New Westminster, B.C.


Hours:
Flexible hours between 6:00pm to 9 -10:30pm (Monday to Sunday)

The Purpose Society is establishing the Health Contact Centre which is the first safe consumption site in New Westminster.

In addition to providing a site where, substances can be used safely, the Centre will offer other programs to enhance the psychosocial outcomes of program participants.


Duties:


The primary duties of the Outreach Volunteer is travel around the community of New Westminster with our Outreach Workers and find people who are using drugs outside, inform them of and invite them to the HCC.

Support people who at risk of opioid overdose or who use other substances, ensure they are safe and support them by providing referrals, and distribute harm reduction supplies.


  • Distribute harm reduction supplies
  • Complete needle sweeps of the surrounding area as required

Qualifications:


  • Ability to maintain a nonjudgmental and nonstigmatizing approach is required
  • Ability to function effectively in difficult and/or crisis situations is required
  • Knowledge of common drugs and their effects

Other:


  • Must be physically and mentally able to be on your feet for long periods, take on physical tasks and work in a fast paced environment
  • Must follow Covid protocols, wear a mask and sanitize/wash hands frequently
