Located at the head of Lake Ontario and within the municipalities of Burlington and Hamilton, Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the nation's earliest nature sanctuaries.

Comprising some 2700 acres of protected wetlands, botanical collections, parkland and display gardens, and within easy access of millions of nature-starved urban citizens, RBG dedicates its expertise in horticulture, conservation, science and education to connect people, plants and place for the purpose of nurturing and preserving healthy growing life on our planet.

RBG directs its efforts, and seeks the support of individuals and organizations, to realize its vision of a world in which everyone is awake to the beauty, diversity and necessity of plants, and from that consciousness more actively works together to protect and preserve plant species and habitats and, by extension, our planet.


Programs Officer:

Camp and Youth Programs responsible for overseeing innovative curriculum connected camp, youth and custom program development while providing exceptional service to all customers.

This is a contact position commencing May 15, 2023 and ending January 13, 2025.


Roles and Responsibilities
Administration

  • Contribute to the creation of Customer Programs annual budget and work within its parameters
  • Quarterly evaluation of programs to evaluate return on investment
  • Assist with the marketing, promotion and sales of programs
  • Prepare monthly revenue and expense summaries, statistics and reports
  • Purchasing within budget and organizational guidelines
Program Planning

  • Oversee innovative camp, youth and custom program development
  • Review and rewrite existing programs as needed
  • Develop policies, procedures, risk management and best practices for program delivery
  • Develop educational support materials, web content etc.
  • Prepare materials, props, supplies for programs
  • Program and market research, program planning and content development
Supervision and Service

  • Recruit, screen, train, supervise and evaluate interpreters and casual/seasonal staff
  • Coordinate with internal partners to ensure excellent service experiences
  • Assist with the daytoday operation of the NIC
Other

  • Remain current with today's trends in outdoor education
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Postsecondary education in environmental science or other field relevant to RBG's mandate, such as environmental and outdoor education
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in planning and delivery of dynamic children's and family programming; experience with inquirybased learning, teaching, program development and delivery, normally obtained through working in an outdoor education facility frontline or supervisory position
  • Excellent knowledge of day camp programming best practices and norms
  • Excellent field naturalists' skills, broad knowledge of natural history, species ID, etc.
  • Experience with staff and volunteer training and oversight
  • Standard First Aid with CPR C + AED or willingness to obtain is required
  • Additional certifications relevant to outdoor education an asset (water safety, ORCKA, leadership etc.)
  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sectors Screening is required at the successful applicant's expense
  • Valid driver's license and transportation

Working Conditions

  • This position requires a 35hour work week; however, flexibility is required as some events are scheduled after hours as well as weekends
  • Ability to work in a fastpaced, challenging environment
