POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY
To be involved with youth in the establishment and maintenance of a therapeutic relationship and the treatment process with the goal of facilitating the youth's return to a community setting.
Two open positions:
Full time evenings, 70 hours biweekly
Full time nights, 70 hours biweekly
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and maintain a strong therapeutic relationship with youth that facilitates effective intervention.
- Engages in all aspects of programming including sports and recreational activities (eg. Swimming, basketball, soccer, hiking, cleaning, crafts, etc.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the psychological and social dynamics of working with emotionally and behaviorally challenged youth.
- Planning and implementation of treatment plans in conjunction with the treatment team.
- Plans, implements, monitors, and participates in group activities, including lifeskills training modules and social recreational programming.
- As part of the Treatment Team, Youth Care Workers provide input into case planning and treatment directions for the youth and have an integral part in achieving resident outcomes
- Utilizes the environment (milieu) in assessing, teaching, and supporting residents around issues such as problemsolving and conflictresolution.
- Adopts ageappropriate "parental role" with the youth in the areas of basic daily living skills and routines, a supportive and encouraging attitude, and proper limit setting.
- Encourages residents to develop family and communitybased support networks, in conjunction with the Treatment Team and which may continue to be accessed upon discharge from Gemma House.
- Intervenes, reports, and documents serious incidents.
- Maintains the safety and security needs of the residents through engagement, supervision, and monitoring.
- Addresses the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of the residents.
- Maintains the physical upkeep of the home and van. Assists with meal preparation, clean up, and general housekeeping duties while on shift.
- Supports residents' spiritual needs and encourages participation in the devotional program.
- Is a caring and involved role model in the lives of the youth and demonstrates behavior consistent with a mature and responsible individual.
- Maintains strictest confidentiality regarding the residents, their issues, and their concerns.
- ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works cooperatively as a team member and provides a coordinated and consistent approach to residents.
- Presents concerns, questions, and issues in prescribed forums.
- Reinforces residence rules, routines, and structure in a consistent and predictable manner.
- Documents daily events, progress towards goals, and any significant occurrences.
- Participates in all team meetings
- Provides input into decisions regarding admissions and discharges from the program.
- Promotes a positive public image of The Salvation Army Gemma House through providing high caliber services and interacting with the public and other community services in a courteous and professional manner.
- Participates as required in the evaluation and goalsetting processes of the organization.
- Engages appropriately in regular supervision with the Managing Director, including performance appraisal.
- Responsible for professional selfdevelopment.
- Demonstrates an understanding of, Agency policies, procedures, and philosophy.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- NOTE: You may be required to provide validated educational documentation.
Education/Certifications:
- Certificate/diploma in Youth (or child) care; Bachelor of social work, Bachelor of Arts, majoring in the social sciences; or Degree in Human Services.
- Current Driver's licence and driving abstract
- CPR First Aid (C)
- TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) training will be provided if necessary
Experience:
- Preferably one year of practical experience in Youth Care field.
- Experience working with youth/women's programs is preferred
