The Position


TRS is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of Therapeutic Recreation/Life Skills Programs and community-outreach initiatives for children and youth with a disability.

Life skills are the problem-solving and life management skills an individual uses to function successfully in 5 areas: self, family, community, school/ job and leisure.

As a member of an interdisciplinary team, The TRS collaborates with clients to develop an intervention plan that supports individual healthy lifestyles and reflects collaboration and communication with the client, family and team.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Practice

  • Collaborates with family and the interdisciplinary team to assess the client's life skill needs and/or Therapeutic Recreation needs, develops and evaluates a plan of care which is goal directed, evidencebased and outcome focused
  • Respects the client/family's rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences
  • Bases practice within framework that includes: teaching problem solving skills, experiential learning approach, calculated risk taking and modelling related to self, family, community, job and leisure
  • Collaborates and partners with external community agencies in order to develop outreach initiatives and build capacity
  • Recreation equipment loan service management
  • Recreation equipment maintenance
  • Recreation equipment client assessment
  • Provides education to clients, families, staff, and where appropriate, students and community professionals
  • Continually develops resources that can be used in the delivery of services
  • Evaluates program effectiveness and makes appropriate recommendations for change
  • Works flexible hours to meet client/family needs
  • Complies with documentation guidelines outlined by hospital
  • Documents accurate workload statistics
  • Provides clinical placements for students
  • Professional Development/Leadership
  • Ensures the maintenance of the Standards of Care for Therapeutic Recreation and Life Skills
  • Identifies practice issues and participates in their resolution
  • Remains current with professional literature
  • Research and Best Practice(s)
  • Participates in research activities as applicable
  • Utilizes research information to inform evidence based practice

Other Responsibilities

  • Attends and actively participates in staff meetings
  • Identifies learning needs and establishes professional goals
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment, and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
  • Communicates in a timely and effective manner

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, with therapeutic recreation emphasis
  • CTRS qualified and/or RTRO preferred
  • Maintain updated CPR status as required
  • Previous job related experience required
  • Life Skills training experience preferred
  • Experience working in the field of Therapeutic Recreation/Life skills, with children/youth with various disabilities
  • Written and verbal English language communication skills required to effectively communicate with clients, families and members of the interdisciplinary team
  • Proven ability to measure service effectiveness and efficiency
  • Demonstrates ability to organize time and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrates initiative and selfdirection
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively and efficiently manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities
  • Proven ability to work with clients, individuals and in a group setting
  • Proven ability to be an effective member of an interprofessional team
