Position Rationale:

Reporting to the Safety Manager, the
Safety Resource Officer provides key support to operations by offering information to all levels of leadership regarding safety initiatives and compliance to policies, procedures, industry standards, acts and laws.

This position acts as a valuable resource to Volker Stevin Group of Companies through delivery of superior customer service, collaboration and by the combined efforts of the entire Safety Team.

Safety Program Management:

• Inspect, analyze, and audit onsite safety efforts offering recommendations and/or taking immediate corrective actions, as required.
• Prepare presentations and provide information to employees and general public regarding company and program rules, regulations and procedures.
• Assist and support leadership with onsite training regarding all internal safety processes including, but not limited to safety meetings, field level hazard assessments and job site inspections.
• Assist the Safety Manager in setting goals and objectives related to safety matters and adopt or devise methods of measuring and recognizing company, division, and departmental progress in safety stewardship and regulatory compliance.
• Be involved in the procurement of the accepted type/style/quality of Personal Protective Equipment to be deployed to employees as prescribed by legislation and company policy.

Internal Safety Committees:

• As directed, promote our safety culture by supporting and being actively involved in various internal safety committees, including but not limited to the Safety Steering Team, the Continuous Improvement Team(s), the Highways Operations Safety Committee, the Construction Operations Safety Committee.

Technical Safety Expertise:

• Be a credible source of advice and knowledge for employees and management in the area of safety work.
• Have a strong awareness of Safety/Environmental laws and regulations and a comprehension of compliance strategies.
• Have a good working knowledge of OH&S Legislation in all operational areas.

Team Contribution:

• Represent the company on various regional and local safety committees as assigned.
• Maintain a high level of communication with the Corporate Services team and all Operational teams in the field.
• Maintain a high level of organization on all aspects of Safety Company Practices & Procedures.
• Practice discretion and the utmost confidentiality on all internal operations and communications.
• Collaborate with all other Corporate Services staff within the Volker Stevin Group of Companies to promote the efficient transfer of information, task execution, and overall results on team support.

Qualifications and Experience:

• National Construction Safety Officer designation, preferred.
• 510 years of safety related experience and/or a related postsecondary education.
• Experience in heavy civil construction and highway maintenance would be an asset.
• Microsoft Office proficiency (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Learning Management Systems and/or Incident Tracking Systems, considered an asset.
