Spiritual Care Provider to support our
Spiritual Care team.


Position Summary:

The Spiritual Care Provider functions as a member of the health care team providing spiritual and religious support. Spiritual Care Professionals focus on the spiritual, religious and emotional needs of patients, families and staff.

Spiritual and religious care is provided in a manner that is multifaith, respecting of cultural, traditional and religious diversities, complimenting and linking with community faith partners.


Accountabilities:


The Spiritual Care Provider accepts responsibility and accountability for maintaining professional certification, for continuing education and for active participation in the vision, direction and activities of the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC).


  • Accountable to the Manager of Spiritual Care.
  • Maintains active membership in CASC.
  • Functions in a collaborative matter with all members of the health care team.
  • Advances knowledge, expertise and care through research, teaching and learning.
  • Implements and maintains "best practice" standards and guidelines.
  • Responsible for ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Commitment to Sinai Health System and CASC Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
  • Knowledge of the administrative policies and procedures of the Hospital and with any other professional body that influences the delivery of spiritual & religious care within the healthcare setting.
  • Documentation of the spiritual care provided, including referrals received, assessments, plans of care, desired outcomes and referrals to other professionals.
  • Maintains appropriate records, including the use of a workload measurement system.
  • Assists in establishing the overall direction of Spiritual Care at Sinai Health System.

Responsibilities:


  • Direct Patient / Community Care (100%).
  • Provides spiritual care to patients, families, staff and volunteers.
  • Initiates regular Spiritual Care visits with patients and responses to requests or referrals made by patients, family or staff and leaders of faith communities.
  • Assesses spiritual, emotional and religious needs of patients visited.
  • When requested and when appropriate, assists patients and families in the process of making challenging moral and ethical decisions based on faith and spiritual beliefs.
  • Facilitates the grief and bereavement process.
  • Assists with care after death, when appropriate, i.e., viewing of body, prayer, and provides pertinent information in order for families to make informed choices.
  • Ensures that patients have the opportunity to contact the faith community of their choice and facilitates the contacts when appropriate or where requested.
  • Collaborates in the planning and celebrating of sacred rituals with the Spiritual Care team and/or community faith partners.

Education and Qualifications:


  • At minimum Master of Divinity or an equivalent degree from an accredited educational institution
  • Member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) or in the process of registering with the college
  • Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience
  • Clinical experience required
  • Experience as a Spiritual Care Professional in a health care setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a fully participating member of the health care team
  • Knowledge of various models of spiritual care and their appropriateness to different practice contexts
  • Effective communication skills and demonstrated sensitivity to the use of authority
  • Excellent counseling/clinical skills and compliance with confidentiality requirements
  • Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multitask
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise volunteers and mentor students
  • Demonstrated ability to network with the larger community and faith community.
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
  • Awareness of the process of spiritual development and the provision of care appropriate to patient's developmental states throughout the care process
  • Understanding and commitment to the provision of spiritual care in its many expressions.
  • Ability to relate theology and behavioural sciences to spiritual care work
