Programming and Automation Control Specialist

Where the Chemistry Happens:


We are looking for a Programming and Automation Control Specialist like you to join our team You will support the automation, robotic, and control system programming at our Regina, SK Canada facility.

Your main responsibility will be to deliver and maintain Control Systems that meet production's requirements and perform as necessary to achieve functionality/safety obligations as well as maximize system capability.

This includes assistance with the system migration and lifecycle process, maintenance recommendation and oversight of installed base equipment, and development/troubleshooting of control logic.


This is an excellent opportunity for you to demonstrate your experience in operations, troubleshooting and maintenance of the following: field instrumentation, process analyzers, process control systems and/or electrical power distribution equipment.

You will also share your working knowledge of chemical plant equipment and technologies, your ability to read and update electrical and instrument documents such as schematics, specifications, P&IDs and one-line diagrams, and extensive computer skills.


Formula for Success:

You Will:


  • Configure, conduct preventative maintenance, hardware/software support, and administration for DCS (Distributed Control System) and PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) based control systems. Monitor failures, assist in initial hardware installations, maintain contract tracking and communication, optimize software version upgrades and address vendor liaison issues such as quick fixes for system problems.
  • Support the ongoing development and implementation of the digitalization and automation roadmap for the Regina site. Drive implementation of automation initiatives that align with the strategy. This will involve leading others as well as personally completing deliverables.
  • Support all capital projects on site to ensure adequate scoping, planning and implementation of control systems in alignment with the Digitalization and Automation Strategy.
  • Act as the site Officer of Automation Security (OAS), for production automation systems (OT), as well as Lab, Logistics, and Building (LLB) automation systems.
  • Conduct training and ensuring compliance of both internal BASF employees as well as contractors with exposure to automation systems.
  • Maintain a register of all automation devices, conduct recurring automation security risk assessments, maintain site automation security procedures. and maintain a register of software license, and their active user accounts pertaining to OT systems.

What We Look for in You:


  • Education in Computer/Instrument Engineering, or technologist diploma, electronics and extensive experience in plant automation and control system support. Undergraduate degree in Computer/Instrument Engineering is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 35 years of experience working directly in controls and automation, spanning various types of control systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in plant automation and control system support including troubleshooting issues in realtime.
  • Chemical or similar industry experience with emphasis on field instrumentation, control elements, VFDs, and process control systems (PLC, DCS, SPLC).
  • Ability to personally configure, troubleshoot, conduct preventative maintenance towards hardware/software in DCS and PLC based control systems.
  • Strong technical knowledge in process controls, field instrumentation, control valves, drives, networking, and control systems.
