Your opportunity:


The Centre for Medicinal Chemistry integrates a national network of leading health care institutions and researchers in its focus on developing cancer therapeutics from initial computational design right through to definitive animal trials.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, Patrick Gunning, the incumbent works as a member of the Gunning group by supporting research that works to develop lead compounds that have the potential to be turned into cancer-fighting drugs.

As a Laboratory Technician, you will be an integral part of the team in constructing proof of concept experiments, such HPLC purification experiments, and providing expertise and training to graduate students and post-doctorates on the operation, maintenance and repair of complex instrumentation, such as Biotage isolera purification systems.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Constructing proof of concept experiments to test different elements of the process.
  • Collecting experimental data, verifying results and passing on findings.
  • Preparing draft statistical reports and summaries from data collected.
  • Scheduling the use of lab equipment and resources.
  • Liaising with service provider to resolve issues with malfunctioning equipment.
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimentalprocedures and protocols.
  • Collaborating with staff and course instructors to determine lab set up requirements.
  • Ensuring the safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials while operating within close proximity to others.

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years experience in a chemistry lab environment.
  • Proficiency with major chemistry, biology and biophysical lab instruments and procedures.
  • Experience in an academic and fast paced research laboratory is required.
  • Experience with Chromscope Software is required.
  • Experience with Biotage brand instrument operation, maintenance, repair and training is required including Isolera Flash Column Chromatography (Isolera Dalton, Isolera Spektra with ACI and Assist, Isolera Prime, Alstra Peptide Synthesizer, V10 Evaporator, Initiator+ Fourth Generation Microwave Synthesizer).
  • Experience in maintenance, and training of all the following instruments is required: Automated Isothermal Titration Calorimetry, Biacore Surface Plasmon Resonance, Labconco Lyophilizer Freeze Dryer, High Performance Liquid Chromatography(HPLC), Preparative High Performance Liquid Chromatography (Binary and Quaternary pumps), Continuousflow Hydrogenation Reactor (Hcube), Waldner fume hoods, Waldner Solvent dispensing system, Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC), Fluorescence platereader, ChemiDoc Imaging System, Cytation 3 Microscope Cell Imaging Multi-Mode Reader, Positive Displacement Pipettes, Automatic electronic pipettes/electronic multidispensing pipettes, Autorep E repeating dispensers, Liquidator 96 Well Manual Pipetting System, Lonza Transfection System (Nucleofector).
  • Must be able to identify existing and potential lab safety hazards and possess WHMIS and a Biosafety Certificate to work in the level II containment lab.
