About Covenant House Vancouver:

Since 1997, Covenant House Vancouver has provided relentless support for youth experiencing, or at-risk of experiencing, homelessness.

We provide support to young people age 16 to 24 who have experienced a wide range of early life and ongoing, complex trauma; including physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect.

Our purpose is to serve all youth, with absolute respect and unconditional love, to help youth experiencing homelessness, and provide a safe and supportive environment for all youth in need.


The Impact The Occupational Health And Safety Lead Can Make:

Reporting to the Director, People & Culture, the Occupational Health and Safety Lead will play a vital role in fulfilling Covenant House Vancouver's commitment to providing a safe and healthy workplace at our 3 downtown Vancouver locations.

Your proactive approach for implementing strategic occupational health and safety programs, fostering a culture of health and safety awareness, and ability to lead the development of a comprehensive safety program and lead investigations are key to enable Covenant House to remain a renowned workplace.


How You Will Contribute:


Main Duties:


Workplace culture and policies

  • Develop and implement strategies that create a culture of safety engagement amongst employees and leadership.
  • Champion health and safety within Covenant House Vancouver and ensures compliance with legislation and agency policies and standards.
  • Provide leadership and education to all employees on Health and Safety.
  • Promote, monitor and evaluate safety programs and practices to make recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Work closely with Programs and Operations teams to identify safety risks, build preventative responses, and foster a culture of shared responsibility and commitment
  • Provide leadership and serve as a point of escalation to managers on all safety matters
  • Lead projects for the continuous improvement of Covenant House safety programs, including consulting with leadership to develop action plans and programs
  • Drive health and safety initiatives that support achievement of agency goals.

WorkSafe BC

  • Manage WSBC claims and oversee Stay at work and Return to Work programs.
  • Manage response to WSBC Orders and Notice of Compliance responses
  • Act as point of contact for WSBC.

Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee

  • Cochair Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee
  • Function as the central point of contact to support applicable incident and nearmiss reporting, investigation and followup.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Covenant House's OH&S Committee(s), ensuring that they are meeting regulatory requirements as well as program/department needs.
  • Support employees in investigating incidents, lead all serious incident investigations and prepare reporting, root cause analysis and followup of the recommendations.

Safety Information Management

  • Provide reports and statistical information to management as required
  • Analyze safety data, identify risks, and conduct research and audits
  • Develop and implement 'best practices' annual safety plans and programs.
  • Provide ongoing administrative support to Covenant House's safety program, including managing documentation, creating and updating templates, researching best practices, and developing processes.
  • Keep current on all relevant safety legislation and regulations, and ensure Covenant House remains compliant with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Training, Coaching & Audit

  • Lead agency Audits and safety training.
  • Monitor policy changes and government initiatives, and share with leadership updates on Safety performance, H&S incident trends, root causes of issues, corrective actions, policy changes, etc.
  • Build and maintain relationships with operational and functional management teams to inspire, coach, influence and challenge behaviour and leadership with the intent of driving a culture of H&S and caring for our employees.
  • Provide coaching and advice to operational leadership on best practices in order to facilitate the implementation of strategic goals and awareness of emerging trends and policies.
  • Conduct departmentlevel assessments to determine compliance with safety programs, policies, and regulations, including gap analysis and review of regulatory requirements.
  • Perform safety audits and inspect work areas, offices, and worksites to identify possible safety issues, and implement mitigation measures.

Who We Are Looking For?:


Education and Experience:


  • Postsecondary education in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Possession of or working towards CSSE, CRSP or similar designations a very strong asset
  • Minimum of 2 years of
