    The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada's used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

    Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada's plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.

    Engineer/Scientist/Technical Officer – Environment Program

    (Full Time- Toronto, Ontario)

    Reporting to the Manager, Environment, the successful candidate will be a member of a dedicated team responsible for the impact assessment and CNSC licensing for a deep underground geological repository.

    This position offers an exciting opportunity for professional growth with focus on contract administration, data management and analysis of environmental data in support of field activities. This is a Progression-In Place (PIP) role. Applicants with lesser experience/qualifications may be considered for aposition at a lower rate and be progressed in place.

    • Provide technical expertise, guidance and input on the implications of the latest environmental developments as they relate to design, construction, engineering, mining and facility operations.
    • Develop solutions to environment-related problems in support of facility or operations, maintenance, design or construction, proposing directions, setting objectives and carrying out environmental programs.
    • Assist with the coordination of the environmental assessment process for project developments, including engagement with government agencies and the public, and resolution environmental issues, Indigenous Knowledge, local input and participation and management of consultants, leading to environmental approvals.
    • Be knowledgeable of the capabilities of external agencies and individuals in supporting work programs.
    • Perform gap analysis and planning of studies needed to support federal and provincial regulatory submissions and approvals.
    • Review environmental program reports for compliance with federal and provincial regulatory requirements.
    • Oversee contractors responsible for field planning and implementation of sampling programs and analysis and reporting of the data.
    • Provide data management, data control, tabulation and analysis of ongoing environmental data collection programs for all media (eg. Ecological survey data, surface water sample data)
    • Perform quality assurance/quality control checks on analytical data to confirm compliance with prescribed thresholds and limits.
    • Review and quality assure field investigation data, GIS data and products created and delivered by external sources to ensure compliance with the NWMO's Quality Assurance Protocols.
    • As required, coordinate with analytical laboratories on the delivery of analytical data, create data delivery templates.
    • Prepare reports and presentations.
    • As a representative of the NWMO, present to the public, Indigenous peoples, technical groups, government authorities and other organizations.
    • Remain up to date on current developments through technical publications, conference participation, co-operative projects and contact with external and international experts.
    • Lead projects and contracts. Participate in the development and issuance of contracting documents (RFP's) and evaluation and selection of contractors. Review work plans; review technical reports and outputs; monitor/report on contractor performance against work plans and schedule.
    • May be required to participate in budget submissions, financial evaluation and purchases justification as required.
    • Ensure that all work activities reflect an awareness of, and follow, applicable legislated, corporate and departmental safety requirements and programs.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • 4 year university degree in Environmental Science (or equivalent) or Environmental Engineering degree
    • Over 6 years' experience in environmental assessment, environmental science or ecology.
    • A full understanding of the problems and regulations encountered in consideration of environmental effects and mitigation, as related to the design, construction, maintenance, and facility operation.
    • Experience resolving complex environmental issues with local rights holders and stakeholders, government agencies and stakeholders, and the provincial and federal environmental assessment process.
    • Experience working with local rights holders and stakeholders on community-based monitoring programs or similar and interweaving Indigenous Knowledge and Western Science.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Must be able to effectively apply theoretical and practical technical knowledge and use sound analytical thinking to solve problems.
    • This is aProgression-In Place role.Applicants with lesser experience or qualifications may be considered for aposition at a lower level commensurate with their experience.
    • Familiarity with legislated requirements.
    • Must be a self-starter with an inherent desire to learn and the ability to quickly self-teach new skillsets.
    • Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.

    The following skills and experience are considered assets:

    • Environmental science or ecology experience working with GIS analysis and statistics.
    • ESRI suite of product experience including ArcGIS Desktop and Survey123.
    • Experience designing statistically significant environmental monitoring programs.
    • Good understanding of site Quality Assurance and Quality Control site investigation procedures.
    • Familiar with environmental site investigation and impact assessment methodologies such as surface water monitoring programs, ecological studies, borehole drilling and hydrogeological testing and associated data types.
    • Experience presenting in a public forum (e.g. community or Indigenous engagement, national or international conferences or equivalent).

    The position will require periodic overnight travel to support field activities.

    Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.

    NWMO currently operates in a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office (Tuesdays being universal) and 2 days working from home.
