Description
The Individual Learning Modules Office is responsible for the creation, maintenance, and distribution of all Individual Learning Modules (ILMs).

ILMs are standardized learning resources for instructors and students in apprenticeship, trades, and technical training courses, and are based on Alberta's apprenticeship curriculum guides to meet industry standards in Alberta.

The ILM office, both a learning resource development and publishing team, manages ILM content development, product creation, publishing, and product distribution.


Reporting to the ILM Manager Product Development and Publishing, the ILM Graphic and Technical Illustration Lead is responsible for leading a team of creative graphic design and technical illustrator professionals who create visual content to aid student comprehension and support trades and apprenticeship teaching and learning via ILMs.

This is a senior role within the ILM structure and is part of the ILM strategic and operational leadership team.

The Graphic and Technical Illustration Lead works closely with Managers and the Content Development Team and provides art direction and oversees the creation of drawings, graphics, images, and illustrations created by the ILM graphics team.

They play a pivotal role in guiding the artistic direction of their team's work for ILM content development projects, inspire the team of designers to deliver exceptional and innovative work across various mediums, and provide coaching and training for the team, as needed.


The Graphic and Technical Illustration Lead position requires a strong knowledge of design principles, visual literacy and comprehension, implementation practices, evolving design technologies and print and digital production standards.

The role also requires strong communication skills, excellent organizational and project management skills, and leadership skills.

They are responsible for managing and assigning work to the ILM graphics team and will be required to review and follow-up on those work assignments to ensure they are of excellent quality, meet project requirements, align with ILM graphics, image, and style guidelines, and are delivered on time.

The Graphic and Technical Illustration Lead maintains an understanding of graphics work occurring across all, concurrent ILM content development projects, and ensures the teams work is assigned appropriately according to type and level of skill required, graphics development requirements, complexity, and due dates.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Art Direction
  • Set the creative vision and direction for all visual content in ILM development projects.
  • Inspire and lead a team of designers, providing guidance, feedback, and coaching.
  • Collaborate with crossfunctional teams to conceptualize and develop creative strategies for visual content across all ILM products.
  • In consultation with the Manager and the ILM Leadership team, develop visual styles and guidelines for visual content, graphics, technical illustrations, and all other artwork created for ILM products.
  • Lead by example by creating highquality designs that serve as benchmarks for the team.
  • Provide guidance on design elements (e.g. layout, typography, color theory) to ensure cohesive and impactful visuals.
  • Team Leadership and Supervision
  • Participates on ILM leadership team to develop and prioritize strategies, improve processes, and resolve problems within the work unit.
  • Supervision and coordination of graphic design teamwork.
  • Provide training and support for graphics team member.
  • Collaborate with other department leads to ensure graphics team is meeting project deliverables and expectations, and that their work meets the creative vision.
  • Utilization of a project management system to manage team tasks and assignments.
  • Create and maintain guidelines and processes for graphic designer/illustrator training, and organization, storage, and management of ILM visual asset and artwork files.
  • During periods of high work volume, the Graphic Design Lead may also be called upon to create and develop some of the required graphics and illustrations themselves, holding their own work and visual content development to the same standards as the graphics team they lead.
