Position Summary:


  • Reporting to the Manager of Accounting
  • School Finances & Risk Management the Supervisor of Accounting
  • School Finances provides guidance, training and support to schools to ensure policy compliance, accuracy of records and analysis of school generated funds reports and school decentralized budgets.
  • The Supervisor of Accounting
  • School Finances is also responsible for the supervision of the Supervisors
  • School Business in the Secondary panel in collaboration with school Principals. The Supervisor of Accounting
  • School Finances must act as a key resource in providing advice and instruction to schools' administrative staff, third party financial services and software providers, vendors, auditors and other external stakeholders. The Supervisor of Accounting
  • School Finance is also responsible for the implementation, maintenance and security of systems used for financial transactions and reporting in coordination with the Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the planning and execution of processes and overseeing the financial work performed in schools using accounting training and expertise to ensure that internal controls and procedures are in place and being followed to mitigate risk and ensure efficient and effective operations
  • Coordinates the collection, administration, consolidation and analysis of school generated funds financial reporting for yearend management, Ministry reporting purposes and identification of unusual patterns and activity. Coordinates yearend reporting of Board's annual Charitable Information Return
  • Implements, promotes, and provides user support and reporting for the Board's Financial systems including Sparkrock (NAV), eBASE, School Cash Suite and community portal using technical training and accounting expertise
  • Reviews existing procedures and processes to ensure continual efficiency and effectiveness and compliance with Public Sector Accounting Board Standards (PSAB), legislative requirements of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance etc. and uses training, experience and professional judgment to design and implement new or updated processes and procedures
  • Prepare annual school budget allocations using data from a variety of sources and analyze impact of proposed changes to the school budget allocation model.
  • Work collaboratively with school staff, Superintendents, School Council members and external stakeholders on special events and school projects to ensure all HDSB policies and procedures are adhered to and decisions align with HDSB's mission and values
  • Ensure adherence to Administrative Procedure on Charitable Donations and regulatory requirements for donations to the Board
  • Manages talent and financial resources to ensure they are being used effectively by using leadership and management skills

Minimum Qualifications:


  • A University degree
  • 5 years of related work experience in Accounting or Finance role
  • 23 years in supervisory role
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
  • Knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Board Standards
  • Knowledge of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Donation and Commodity taxes (HST) requirements
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Understanding of software functionality and data management
  • Knowledge of internal controls and experience with designing and managing internal controls
  • Valid Driver's License and access to vehicle

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors of Commerce, Accounting or Business
  • 57 years of work experience in a Supervisory role in the Public Sector of Accounting or Finance
  • 35 years of experience working with Public Sector Accounting Board Standards (PSAB)
  • Additional courses in School Board Administration at a University Level
  • Project management skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Experience with monthend and yearend procedures
