Position Summary:

The Community Planning Advisor connects with the members of Edmonton's Community League movement to support the positive role of Leagues in shaping the physical and social environment of their neighbourhoods.

The Community Planning Advisor assists Leagues, individually and collectively, with planning matters affecting their neighbourhoods.


Working Environment:

This position works a hybrid schedule of four days per week, with at least two days in person at the EFCL office.

Some additional hours may be required depending on the needs of the organization.

This is a temporary contract that will cover a leave of absence in this role. The position is expected to begin July 24, 2023 and end September 13, 2024.


Duties and responsibilities

League Support

  • Assist and advise Leagues, individually and collectively, with land use, transportation and community engagement matters in their neighbourhoods.
  • Organize opportunities for Leagues to network and work on urban planning related projects together.
  • Promote, support and facilitate the engagement of Community League members in City of Edmonton decisionmaking when applicable.
  • Support capacity of Leagues to engage their community in preparing or updating a community vision for their neighbourhood(s) and a strategic plan to achieve that vision.

Advisory Work

  • Provide support to the EFCL Community Planning and Sustainability Working Group, EFCL Board of Directors and Community Leagues, keeping them informed on planning proposals that have implications for a majority of Leagues and their neighbourhoods.
  • Prepare agendas and reports, including evidencebased background information, for regular EFCL Community Planning and Sustainability Working Group meetings and/or the EFCL Board as required.

Partnering Work

  • Ensure EFCL input to City administration and City Council is effectively delivered through written and oral presentations as needed.
  • Maintain communications and positive working relationships with City administration, City Council and building industry organizations.

Operational Support

  • Support the work of the Executive Director and Board of Directors where land use is concerned.
  • Represent EFCL on relevant external committees and working groups.
  • Assist with EFCL general meetings and special events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education or training in urban planning or other relevant field
  • A minimum of 25 years experience working in an urban planning context
  • A minimum of 25 years experience working in a community development or engagement context
  • A minimum of 25 years experience interpreting city bylaw, zoning regulation, and other relevant legislation and policy
  • Group facilitation, mentoring and coaching skills
  • Advocacy experience with various levels of government.

$55,965.00-$66,638.32 per year
