New Directions is a non-profit social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that provide supports in a variety of settings and foster people's hopes and dreams in their communities.


The Accounting Clerk serves as part of the Accounting & Payroll team, and is responsible for processing invoices, account reconciliation, reporting, filing and cheque requisitions. The Accounting Clerk is involved in both accounts payable and accounts receivable functions for a variety of service areas and supports the resource teams of each department. The Accounting Clerk collaborates with other Clerks and supports the Assistant Controller to ensure accuracy with the organizations' financial data.


Responsibilities Include:


  • Verifies, and reconciles transactions such as accounts payable and receivable, purchase orders, cheques, invoices, and cheque requisitions.
  • Ensures proper coding and authorizations for all invoices, based on operational policies.
  • Prepares cheques and electronic payments to vendors and the organization's staff
  • Prepares sales invoices and credit memos for customers.
  • Prepares monthly bank account reconciliation.
  • Completes weekly journal entries involving bank transactions.
  • Completes monthly reconciliation of various general ledger (G/L) accounts, credit card statements, and vendor accounts.
  • Maintains vendor information within the accounting software.
  • Eeviews and updates billing information for customers and/or vendors
  • Supports the auditing process
  • Serves as a first point of contact for accounting inquiries from various department / service areas.
  • Coordinates centralized accounting inbox and communication.
  • Provides accurate reports to management on accounts as required
  • Conducts audits to ensure data integrity of information in accounting software.

Qualifications for this role include:


  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working in an accounting clerk role, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Postsecondary education (degree, diploma or certificate) in Accounting from a recognized postsecondary institution. A combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Basic knowledge of financial management and budgeting.
  • Demonstrated organization and time management skills, with an attention to detail with record keeping and administrative tasks.
  • Proven ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Excel, Work, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language is considered an asset.


The salary range for this full-time, 70-hour bi-weekly position is $18.31 to $24.72 per hour, dependent upon education and/or experience.
