Physiotherapy Clinical Extern (OPCE).



Position summary:


As an occupational therapy/ physiotherapy clinical extern, occupational therapy or physiotherapy students are provided with the opportunity of gaining valuable experience in a clinical setting, while building their self-confidence, collaboration and communication skills.

This role provides a supervised environment for current occupational therapy or physiotherapy students to gain knowledge and skills that will help them as they transition to their post-graduate careers.


OPCEs are unregulated health care providers that work under the supervision of a regulated healthcare professional to enhance patient care.


Primary Responsibilities:


  • Assist the team with basic clinical tasks (i.e. equipment set up, assist with wheelchair following the patient and portering patients) under the direct or indirect supervision of a regulated healthcare professional (Occupational Therapist / Physiotherapist)
  • Assist with turning, repositioning and patient transfers using lifts and other transfer devices under the direct/ indirect supervision of the regulated health care professional
  • Assist patient with activities recommended by the health care team to maintain functional independence such as ADLs, transfers, and ambulation
  • Answering call bells, addressing patient concerns where appropriate and advising the appropriate registered health professionals when assistance is required to follow up
  • Engage and encourage patients to participate in therapy and assist in promoting a friendly environment
  • Documenting care provided, under supervision of regulated healthcare professional
  • Supporting group exercise programs run by Occupational Therapist (OT)/ Physiotherapist (PT) or Rehab Assistants (RA) (i.e. equipment set up, portering patients and demonstrations of exercises)
  • Wiping down surfaces or therapeutic materials
  • Assist with OT/PT/RA with lean projects on all floors
  • Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy students in any year of study of a training program accredited by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) or accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC) respectively.
  • Demonstrates ability to complete patient care tasks as directed
  • Demonstrates ability to multitask with proven organizational skills
  • Excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates confidence in knowledge, skills, judgement and ability to function in the team based model of care
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent work performance and attendance record
