Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist / Practitioner (Band 6)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our innovative Respiratory Services team as we expand to deliver an Acute Respiratory Virtual Ward. With newly secured funding, we are seeking a motivated and experienced Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist / Practitioner to help shape and deliver high-quality respiratory care across East Berkshire.
You will work within a supportive multidisciplinary team, providing patient-centred care across community and hospital settings. As a skilled Respiratory CNS, you will use advanced clinical, communication and interpersonal skills to assess and manage patients with respiratory conditions, particularly COPD and those requiring oxygen therapy. Care delivery will reflect patients' social, cultural and spiritual needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver high-quality care for patients with respiratory illness.
- Facilitate safe discharge of suitable COPD patients and support admission avoidance.
- Assess, initiate and review home oxygen therapy across East Berkshire.
- Provide specialist respiratory advice to Hospital Trusts, Berkshire East Community Health Services (BECHS) and GP practices.
- Support service development towards an integrated, consistent respiratory pathway.

Main duties of the job
You will deliver specialist respiratory assessment and intervention for patients with a wide range of acute and chronic respiratory conditions. Working collaboratively with nurses, physiotherapists, nursing associates, associate practitioners, technicians and administrative colleagues, you will contribute to the development of holistic, evidence-based management plans tailored to individual patient needs.
The role involves assessing patients with complex physical and psychological presentations, planning and implementing personalised treatment programmes, and supporting the wider team in delivering safe, effective care.
A strong understanding of respiratory disease management is essential, including knowledge of local and national guidance relating to:
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Bronchiectasis
- Interstitial Lung Disease
- Asthma
- Home Oxygen therapy
A special interest in COPD would be advantageous.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse – Part 1,2,12
- First degree in nursing, or demonstrable experience at this level
- Teaching / assessment programme
- Relevant specialist post basic programme in respiratory / experience or relevant community nursing qualification
Desirable criteria
- Diploma/ degree in respiratory care (COPD / Asthma) or willing to complete
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant clinical experience in the same or related speciality OR recent clinical experience in the acute or community setting
- Experience in managing the acutely unwell respiratory patient in a hospital setting
- Experience in acting as a clinical supervisor and mentor to others
Desirable criteria
- Previous community nursing experience
- CBG / ABG interpretation
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Demonstrates up to date knowledge in general nursing
- Knowledge of the COPD and asthma outcomes strategy, NICE & BTS guidelines
- Clinical knowledge & skills in respiratory care
- Able to work autonomously and within a team
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Keyboard and word processing skills
Desirable criteria
- Experience of applying research evidence to clinical practice
- Presentation and teaching experience
- Advanced clinical assessment skills
Special requirements
Essential criteria
- Full driving licence and access to a car for use to travel across sites and perform domiciliary visits
- Willing to be able to work weekends and unsocial hours
