OCTD (Organization of Canadian Tamils with Disabilities) is the oldest Toronto-based non-profit organization with a vision to better the lives of Tamil Canadians living with disabilities.

What do we do? We provide programs and services that are designed to empower our clients with the skills they need to live an independent and empowered life.

We connect families with community programs, tools, and resources so they can better support their children with special needs. We create awareness, build bridges and break stigmas about disabilities in our community.


Canada Summer Job Mandatory Requirements:

This position is a Canada Summer Job initiative.

In order to be considered for this position, it is required that you are:


  • Between 1530 years of age at the start of employment
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Holding a Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations

What We Seek from you:


  • You have completed, or, is pursuing postsecondary studies, preferably in special needs education or related field
  • You are between 1825 years of age
  • You share a genuine passion in helping and motivating our clients with special needs
  • You will fill role as educator/facilitator for child/youth with special needs in a small group setting
  • You will work with staff and volunteers to plan and coordinate programs and activities that are focused on fostering developmental, social and cognitive skills for our clients
  • You will track, measure, and record progress of each child according to their abilities
  • You will work with the staff and parents by providing feedback and guidelines to support longterm growth of the children
  • You will be proactive and provide weekly feedback to the staff on the effectiveness of the programs and activities
  • As programs could include teaching basic computer literacy to our clients, a working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office would be an added skill
  • You will also be supporting the staff with administrative tasks when needed, for which some administrative experience or skill would be sought
  • You will be assisting clients with their Resume preparation and formal letter writing, and hence a good command of English language is required
  • Activities include teaching basic life skills to clients with disabilities, including tying show laces, setting up dinner table, etc., and hence perseverance and patience is of utmost importance
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds is expected
  • As our organization focuses on providing services to Tamils, Tamil language skills will be considered an asset, especially interacting in Tamil with the parents and the clients.

COVID pandemic related requirements:


  • As our summer camp programs and workshops will be conducted remotely, you will be organizing and conducting online workshops via zoom and other online tools.
  • In case of any inperson workshops, you must comply with all the Covid related requirements including social distancing and Personal Protective Equipment.
  • In case of any inperson workshops, the workshops must also comply with the maximum allowable number of persons at the time of the workshop.

Here is What you need to know:

  • Required commitment: 30 hours/ week for 9 weeks
  • Hourly wage: $14/ hour plus 4% vacation pay
  • Anticipated start date: July 02, 201
  • You will work online during the morning summer camp hours (10:00am 2:00pm) taking place five days per week, using Zoom or other conferencing tools
  • You will work online during regular evening workshop hours (6:30pm 8:30pm) taking place three days per week, using Zoom or other conferencing tools
  • You will be working offline for 5 1⁄2 hours per week towards prepreparation of everyday activities and postrecording of everyday activities
