Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG) is hiring a
Seasonal Horticulturist to expand our horticultural team for the 2023 season.

TBG is a not-for-profit charity focused on connecting people with plants and inspiring people to live in harmony with nature.

The Garden is a 4-acre botanical garden nestled in the City of Toronto's Park System adjacent to Edwards Gardens and the Wilket Creek Trail.


We are looking for someone who has a passion for plants, tending gardens, and who loves to be hands-on and challenged in a team environment.

Reporting to the Director of Horticulture, or their designee, the
Seasonal Horticulturist is responsible for implementing the planting and care of the Toronto Botanical Garden plant collections.

This is a seasonal position that supports the Garden from early-spring through November (exact contract dates to be confirmed upon offer).


Position Summary

  • Caring for the plant collections and temporary plant displays/exhibits, indoors and outdoors
  • Work with hand tools and light/medium power equipment: including but not limited to secateurs, hand saws, backpack blower, string trimmer, lawn mower, and utility vehicle
  • Regular garden tasks including weeding, pruning, deadheading, and watering.
  • Preparation of soil for planting & transplanting where necessary.
  • Spreading of compost, fertilizer & mulch where necessary
  • Plant identification, including woody, perennial, annual, vegetable, and indoor plants
  • Identification of weeds, insects and disease for their prevention and treatment
  • Maintenance and operation of an irrigation system and water features
  • Interact with TBG members and garden visitors, providing positive guest experiences
  • Work with garden volunteers, interns, and coop students; provide direction and supervision when necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

Other Duties

  • Assist with TBG learning, education, audience engagement and other offerings as needed.

Working Environment


Work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; cold, warm, humid, hot air may regularly occur; exposure to radiant energy and inclement weather; exposure to fertilizers, and organic pest control agents.

Outdoor environments in different seasons. Much of the work is done in public areas with frequent interaction with visitors.


Physical Demands


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Essential and marginal duties require a high level of stamina and in good physical condition.

Daily duties may include moderate lifting (up to 50lbs.), carrying, walking, repeated bending, being on your feet for most of the day, working with garden tools, working outside during adverse conditions, operating mechanical equipment, operation of computers, the ability to distinguish colors and the ability to drive vehicles safely.


Requirements:


  • Certificate, Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in horticulture, botany, or related field is; OR 13 years related experience; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Public garden experience is preferred.
  • Successful track record of working with volunteers is preferred.
  • Skill with hand tools and light/medium power tools and equipment: including but not limited to hand saws, hand shears, electric shears, backpack blower, string trimmer, lawnmower, chainsaw, utility vehicles.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and statutory holidays, when necessary
