WIAIH (The West Island Association for the Intellectually Handicapped) is a charitable organization that aims to increase opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorder, support their families and sensitize the community.

The Pat Roberts Developmental Centre is ideal for children who demonstrate developmental delays, both diagnosed and undiagnosed.

It provides an appropriate learning experience through playful interactions for children from birth to 6 years of age while supporting their families in a positive and proactive manner.


JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the Pat Roberts Developmental Centre Manager, the specialized educator will have as main responsibilities:

  • Care for small groups of children with special needs by planning and organizing group activities that are stimulating and developmentally appropriate for each child; ensure their safety and well-being;
  • Incorporate goals targeted by other professionals, i.e. occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, etc.
  • Identify the most relevant needs of each child in cooperation with parents and other professionals involved, organize interventions and assess their impact;
  • Communicate relevant information to the families regarding the child's development and progress;
  • Support parents' efforts to encourage children's independence and learning in their home environment;
  • Promote the parent's autonomy so that he/she can act with the child;
  • Write an observation report three times a year describing each child in all aspects of the development (receptive and expressive language, autonomy, emotional regulation, gross and fine motor skills, social skills, play skills);
  • Maintain classrooms organized and in good condition.

TRAINING AND SKILLS PROFILE

  • College degree in Special Care Counseling or any equivalent training;
  • Relevant experience in the field of special care counseling or special education;
  • Bilingualism, both written and spoken;
  • Good knowledge of child development, atypical development in relation to a delay or diagnosis, and the various interventions and approaches;
  • Proven capacity to execute intervention strategies for challenging behaviors;
  • Demonstrate good empathetic listening and interpersonal skills;
  • Have a strong interest in teamwork.
