Northern Leopard Frog Field Technician to support our Northern Leopard Frog Recovery Project as part of our Reintroduction portfolio.

The Northern Leopard Frog Field Technician will directly contribute to research on one of BC's most endangered amphibian species.

Office work is based in Calgary, AB (unless local to project area) and field work will be in Kimberley, BC (2-3 days a week) from April to September (food and housing provided while in Kimberley).

Core tasks include monitoring and analysis of acoustic recording units (ARUs; e.g., songmeters), collection and analysis of periphyton samples, reintroduction of tadpoles, and visual surveys for frogs.


Contract Term:


  • Approximately March 30, 2023 to September 29, 2023, with possibility of extension

What You Will Do:


  • In the field:_
  • Deployment of acoustic recording units (ARUs; e.g., songmeters) and other relevant loggers
  • Nocturnal calling surveys, as needed
  • Egg mass surveys, as needed
  • Release or translocation of tadpoles from captive facilities and the wild source population
  • Collection of previously deployed artificial substrates for periphyton sampling
  • Visual surveys for recently metamorphosed frogs
  • Capture, measuring, and disease swabbing of frogs
  • Walking long distances through grassland habitat (in chest waders) and around/in wetlands, including wading in water up to 1.25 m deep
  • Working alone and in small groups
  • Collaborating with other conservation organizations and governments
  • Maintaining high standards of data accuracy and entry
  • Coordinating with volunteers, donors, or other field visitors
  • Adhering to the organization's stringent health and safety procedures and policies for animal welfare
  • In the office_:
  • Data entry
  • Analysis of data from ARUs (songmeters) to check for northern leopard frog calling
  • Drying and weighing of periphyton samples
  • Analysis of frog photos for identification
  • Other tasks, as required

What You Will Bring:


  • Possess or working towards a BSc or equivalent education
  • Minimum 1 year experience with biological field work and data collection
  • Class 5 driver's license or equivalent Canadian license
  • Standard First Aid Certificate required, Wilderness First Aid is preferred
  • Demonstrate a passion for wildlife conservation and a love of working outdoors
  • A moderate to high level of physical fitness
  • An eye for detail and understanding of standardized research designs, as accurate and precise data collection and entry are essential
  • Experience working in a field crew and living with coworkers in close quarters
  • Ability to take direction, and complete work and solve problems with mínimal supervision
  • A commitment to adhere to safety protocols and contribute to safe operating practices
  • Experience with data entry, management (in Microsoft Access) an asset

Working Conditions:


  • Fieldwork is located near Kimberley, British Columbia
  • Food and shared housing are provided while in the field
  • Extensive driving on busy highways for up to 6 hours per day
  • Long field days up to 12 hours, including driving, surveying, or conducting other field work
  • Some night work for calling surveys may be required (~9:00 pm to 1:00 am)
  • Prolonged exposure to the elements, including cold or very hot temperatures with limited shade available
  • Typically, two to three days a week of field work; other time will be spent in the office analyzing acoustic data or periphyton samples, entering data, etc.
  • Work week will generally be Monday to Friday, unless otherwise necessary
  • You are responsible for providing your own housing while working in the office in Calgary
