Curator and Gallery Administrator

Full Time Position
Riverdale Hub is a social enterprise in Toronto's East End that houses the Social Gardener Café, Riverdale Hub
Gallery, co-working and event spaces, a rooftop garden, and training programs for marginalized women. Riverdale

Position Summary:

The Curator will co-lead the administration of all arts projects and programming developed at the Hub.

They will be responsible for creating new models and strategies for financial and program sustainability and developing, maintaining and promoting a digital marketplace for artists and artisans in our community.

The Curator will also develop and coordinate exhibitions taking place at the Riverdale Hub galleries, carrying out duties such as liaising with artists and installing artworks.

Responsibilities for this position include developing marketing strategies and materials for the Hub.

The Curator reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Curator of Exhibitions, Programming and
Sales and other staff at the Hub.


Curatorial:


  • Working with curatorial team to create programming, exhibition and event plan for year
  • Curating exhibitions through selection of emerging to midcareer artists, researching and responding to timely themes, topics, and commercial needs of the Riverdale Gallery's community
  • Liaising and building relationships with emerging to midcareer artists
  • Working with curatorial team to oversee installation of artworks
  • Overseeing the implementation of programming

Funding:


  • Creating proposals for programming and exhibitions
  • Researching for new funding opportunities
  • Organizing key findings into final reports at end of funding cycles
  • Tracking key reporting dates
  • Tracking and reporting on grant spending

Business Development:


  • Assisting in developing and maintaining new models and strategies for financial sustainability in the gallery.
  • Overseeing and implementing sales and marketing strategy.
  • Overseeing and developing ecommerce platform artist roster.
  • Developing and tracking budgets for both commercial and publicly funded programs.
  • Overseeing implementation and growth of commercial gallery and ecommerce site.
  • Researching current art market trends, and visiting arts and culture networking events in the GTA.

Marketing & Communications:


  • Developing marketing materials for Riverdale Gallery via print, word of mouth and social media, drawing on past success metrics
  • Engaging community members through social media channels, web content, and outreach activities.
  • Developing marketing strategies to promote all Hub activities.
  • Participating in weekly Hub marketing committee meetings as needed.
  • Overseeing and editing the monthly newsletter for the Hub using Mailchimp.
  • Developing annual reports in collaboration with other program leaders at the Hub.
  • Developing general event timeline and work plan for gallery events

Event Coordination:


  • Overseeing gallery event coordination, including catering menus, setup and cleanup.

Qualifications:


  • Graduate from university/college in a specialized discipline relevant to the arts, visual culture, curatorial studies and/or commerce.
  • At least 2 years of relevant and comparable work experience in the arts.
  • Experience working in both commercial gallery settings and communitybased arts settings.
  • Knowledge of business development from an arts perspective with experience developing different streams of revenue for arts organizations.
  • Extensive knowledge of local and international gallery models.
  • Demonstrated marketing, grant writing, editorial, organizational and research skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in project coordination.
  • Advanced knowledge of all social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, and experience in graphic design and content creation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, as well as independently.
  • Selfmotivated, highly organized, and resourceful.
  • Experienced in and passionate about working with marginalized communities; knowledge of the issues and barriers faced by racialized immigrants, refugees, women, 2SLGBTQ communities of colour is particularly valuable.
  • Strong computer skills (Google Suite, WordPress, Microsoft Office, Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud).
