The Laboratory Manager position plays a critical role in all aspects of laboratory upkeep, maintenance and renewal in Experimental Oncology and the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI), ensuring that resources are used optimally for the enhancement of research activities.

The position requires a comprehensive understanding of the broader aspects of cancer research and the needs of the cancer research community.

The duties of the Laboratory Manager position are focused on ensuring that shared facilities are used optimally and correctly, with training on the use of equipment and facilities constituting an important aspect of the position.

The Lab Manager oversees a team of lab assistants dedicated to providing services to the laboratories and supporting the Lab Manager's position.

With the help of the lab assistants and the Biosafety Officer, the Lab Manager ensures that all laboratory staff are familiar with all aspects of laboratory safety, including radiation, chemical and biosafety/biohazards safety.

The Lab Manager is expected to have a working knowledge of Purchasing through both Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta and dealing with various companies and industrial groups for the acquisition of equipment and related materials.

With support from the grant administrators, the Lab Manager carries out monthly billings for shared products used by the laboratories and maintains and reconciles accounts on a monthly basis.

The Lab Manager reports to the Director, Department of Experimental Oncology, CCI, Cancer Research & Analytics, Alberta Health Services, and to the CCI Infrastructure Management Committee.


Description:


The Lab Manager position interfaces with Administration (AHS and University of Alberta), Building Services, Human Resources, Finances, Radiation Safety personnel, University of Alberta chemical safety personnel, as well as basic scientists, clinician researchers, students, post-doctoral fellows, research associates and research technicians.

Key responsibilities associated with the Lab Manager position include:
(i) leadership in the planning and delivery of services within the framework of the overall strategy and objectives of Experimental Oncology, (ii) optimizing outputs based on available resources, (iii) optimizing lab assistant workflows and efficiencies, (iv) developing training modules for incoming staff at all levels, (v) purchasing shared equipment including obtaining quotes, lab consumables, gases, etc., (vi) maintaining equipment and software inventories, (vii) maintaining the -20C and -80C freezer alarm system and ensuring that contacts are identified for each freezer in case of emergency, (viii) ensuring that all safety protocols (e.g. dosimeters exchange/requests; survey meter calibration; sealed source swipes) are in place; (ix) handling and processing requests coming through the NEB Biobar; and (x) supporting labs that are closing out by ensuring that all decontamination and close-out procedures are adhered to.

Required Qualifications:

PhD and 3 years post-doctoral experience working in a wet lab setting.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:


Experience in purchasing lab supplies and equipment; 3-5 years experience in the maintenance of either a large size laboratory or a facility.
