Operations Manager, School of Nursing

Leadership Opportunity


The School of Nursing is seeking an Operations Manager (OM) who will be responsible for providing strategic leadership in Human Resources and Faculty Relations, and effectively and efficiently managing the School's human resources activities in accordance with university policies and procedures, and School goals and objectives.

As a key member of the School's management team, the OM plans, evaluates, implements, and continuously improves human resources and labour relations for a diverse group of employees:
faculty, management personnel, research staff (technical, professional and research), administrative support staff and temporary-casual staff.

The OM oversees the recruitment and ongoing development of a superior academic, research, and administrative workforce in a unionized environment, understanding the legal constraints and labour-relations implications of actions.

The OM is also responsible for the overall management of the payroll function, including graduate student payroll for Nursing graduate programs and the School's faculty and staff; they ensure smooth and accurate HR information flow, forms processing, database management, and integration with FHS HR.

The Manager will act as delegate for the Director of Administration on assigned committees, on administrative staff payroll approvals, and when required for financial transaction approvals.

They will be working collaboratively with the School's Leadership Team to advance goals, objectives, and strategic priorities. The Manager will design processes and policies contributing to efficient operations across all business functions.


Core Accountabilities:

In a collaborative team environment, which embraces the values of integrity, teamwork, and inclusivity, the Operations Manager will serve as a leader and is accountable for the following:


  • Strategic Leadership:_
  • Provides strategic human resources leadership as a member of the management team
  • Provides leadership in the development of School human resources goals, objectives, plans and support systems that support the accomplishment of the School's strategic goals
  • Assist Vice-Dean and Director of Administration with coordination of endowed chair, fundraising, and faculty and staff award strategies and processes to raise the profile of the School and foster a culture of recognition.
  • Participate in development of the School's EDI strategies
  • Ensure adoption of practices and procedures to deliver on objectives
  • Monitor changes to EDI and recommend changes/updatesSupervises directly three to five fulltime staff.
  • The OM is responsible for all HR functions with staff in the School and is therefore an integral part of the supervision of all staff (over 120 employees).
  • Financial Management:_
  • Assist with development, and implementation and monitoring of the School's financial policies and procedures pertaining to education and research needs, to ensure efficient operation of core admin and research staff.
  • Lead the review and negotiations with suppliers/purchasing for the School
  • Equipment, supplies, special events, employee recognition
  • Human Resources Management:_
  • Recommends, develops and implements recruitment, retention, and succession planning strategies for administrative and research staff
  • Periodic review of job descriptions
  • Career planning and review with administration team members
  • Assist with development and implementation of School orientation programs for both staff and faculty
  • Ensures that employment and consulting contracts comply to university policies and provincial Employment Standards Act
  • Oversees the implementation of ReturntoWork Plans and matters involving work accommodation
  • Maintains current knowledge of the Unifor collective agreement and University Policies and Procedures to ensure that staff, TMG and faculty are adhering to them; works in collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences HR Office to communicate human resources policies, procedures, programs and related employment laws to employees, faculty supervisors and man
