About Greenpeace Canada:

Greenpeace Canada is an independently funded, non-profit organization that works towards a greener, more peaceful world, and to confront the systems that threaten people and the planet.

We challenge government and industry to halt harmful practices by negotiating solutions, conducting scientific research, introducing clean alternatives, carrying out peaceful acts of civil disobedience and engaging the public.

To maintain independence Greenpeace does not accept donations from corporations or governments. Greenpeace relies on individual donors and creative partnerships to fund our environmental justice campaigns.

As an organization, Greenpeace Canada recognizes and supports Indigenous sovereignty and the Land Back movement.

We support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and are committed to collaboration and consultation with Indigenous Peoples to ensure our campaigns and positions respect Indigenous rights and liberation.

The responsibilities and skills for this role are outlined below. Greenpeace Canada fully recognizes lived experiences, unpaid credentials, as well as education and work experiences from outside of Canada. If you are interested in this role, but feel you do not have all of the requirements listed for this position, we highly encourage you to still apply

About the role:

Greenpeace Canada (GPC) is seeking someone with a background in communications who has had experience working with the media.

With climate change on the front pages, people taking to the streets, and growing public concern about the role finance plays in supporting the fossil fuel industry - an industry well-known for driving climate chaos and undermining Indigenous sovereignty - you will play a key role in our campaign to halt the financing of the fossil fuel industry.

As a member of our communication team, you will sit at the very heart of our campaigning operation. You will help shape our communications strategy for our fossil fuel financing campaign. Turning great stories and technical information into compelling content comes easily to you.

Strong writing skills are essential for this position, as you'll primarily focus on crafting the narratives and compelling communications materials, including press releases and media briefings as well as materials for the web and other channels.

You will also contribute to gaining influential media coverage including by identifying strategic media opportunities to further the campaign goals.

A variety of communications experience would be helpful in this role, whether managing a channel, content marketing, copywriting, public relations, etc.

This is a fast-paced job that requires strong initiative, creative thinking, and organizational skills.

We are looking for an articulate and punchy writer, who enjoys content creation, has a good grasp of Canadian media, and is comfortable learning new topics quickly.

If you are already knowledgeable about climate campaigning that will be a great asset for this role.

This would be a great opportunity for either someone working in communications but newer to media work, a former journalist to jump into a storytelling and media relations role, or a digital content creator practiced in crafting effective and appealing messages who wants to gain experience in a fast-paced campaigning organization focused on environmental justice and learn along experienced communications officers and campaigners.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of any First Nations, Inuit, and Métis languages is also desirable. As well as knowledge of other languages that reflect the diversity of Canada's many communities are also desirable.
  • Someone with
solid storytelling skills and strong understanding of narratives, how they come to be and how they develop over time.
  • Who would be able to
translate complex political, scientific and environmental information into succinct and clear messages that successfully reach our target audiences.
  • With
some experience in generating media coverage across a wide range of media outlets, from local media to newspaper features, TV news, and consumer magazines.
  • Who would be
good at spotting opportunities to intervene in current media debates.
  • Who can
demonstrate strong written content creation capabilities, for example as a communications officer, journalist, or content writer.
  • Who will
contribute to our fastmoving strategic campaign planning and development.
  • As well as communication, interpersonal and diplomacy skills, this role will also test one's ability
