    Position Summary: The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) is part of an interprofessional team that includes Neonatologist, Paediatricians, and a robust interdisciplinary team of Nurses, Pharmacists, Dietitians, Occupational Therapist and Social Workers, to diagnose and treat high-risk neonates in a level 2C NICU. The NNP will provide direct clinical care within the program, and embedded within the NNP role, participate and lead in education, research, innovation, quality improvement and safety initiatives. The NNP is an integral leader within the interprofessional/ interdisciplinary team.

    The Principle Responsibilities include:

    Clinical Practice

  • Provides comprehensive family-centered care to the neonatal population
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge and analysis of nursing practice issues, within the scope of NP practice
  • In collaboration with others, develops innovative approaches for complex practice issues
  • Performs a comprehensive history that records and interprets the pertinent medical, family and psychosocial history
  • Assesses daily health status through physical examination and interpretation of test results
  • Guides discharge planning for infants with medical complexity in collaboration with the healthcare team and families
  • Consultation

  • Provides consultation regarding complex patient care needs to nurses, physicians and other members of the team
  • Uses advance practice skills and consultation model
  • Assists nurses and other interprofessional team members to clarify issues, explore options and facilitate change. Areas of consultation may include clinical concerns such as complex symptom management, psychosocial and emotional issues, or professional practice issues.
  • Education

  • Assesses learning needs for professional development of nurses and others within the clinical practice area.
  • Identifies and creates effective learning environments and creates resources for learning for patients/families, physicians, and other health care professionals.
  • Participates in the orientation of nursing staff, physicians, and members of the inter-professional team.
  • Provides clinical supervision, education, and mentorship for undergraduate and graduate nursing students.
  • Research

  • Contributes to others' understanding and application of research and evidenced-based practice
  • Participates in research and utilization and may participate in research studies
  • Communicates the importance of research findings relevant to clinical practice
  • Demonstrates and promotes critical thinking in others to formulate and explore research questions
  • Bases own clinical practice on research and evidenced-based practice and reviews relevant literature
  • Demonstrates the ability and knowledge to participate on research committee.
  • Leadership

  • Participates and provides leadership internally and externally in areas relating to Neonatology
  • In consultation with the inter-professional team, participates in quality improvement activities
  • Anticipates future changes (technology, system, professional development) and participates in providing recommendation and implications
  • Participates in decision making process regarding decisions which impacts on practice
  • Maintains and seeks memberships in provincial and national organizations which will promote self growth and contributes to patient care and the nursing profession

  • Qualifications:

  • Graduate of recognized college or school of nursing
  • Current registration in the Extended Class with College of Nurses of Ontario (Successful completion of Ontario NP-Adult Extended Class examination) required
  • Master's degree in nursing with an approved Nurse Practitioner component or, a Master's degree and a graduate nurse practitioner program.
  • An accredited neonatal nurse practitioner program preferred.
  • RN (EC) license
  • Exceptional skills of leadership, self-direction, and interpersonal communication
  • Neonatal nursing experience includes a minimum of 2 years functioning as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner in a level 2 or 3 Neonatal intensive care unit.
