About the Opportunity:


The Site Radiation Safety Officer (SRSO) oversees all operational aspects of radiation protection activities to ensure that day-to-day operations involving radioactive material and x-ray emitting devices are conducted according to policies and procedures designed to adequately protect public health and safety and maintain exposures ALARA within the central zone of the Nova Scotia Health.

This position will be responsible for but not limited to supporting the Nuclear Medicine department the Provincial Radiopharmacy, the Cyclotron and other Diagnostic imaging areas.


In conjunction with the Nova Scotia Health Corporate Radiation Safety Officer the SRSO assists in the implementing and interpreting national and provincial regulations through education of the procedures to be followed to meet regulatory standards.


Regular audits and inspections of individual department practices are conducted to ensure radiation exposure and dose controls minimize personnel and public exposure.

Facilities and Equipment is assessed to determine that it is appropriate and functioning properly for its intended use. Inventory management is monitored to ensure security of sources and protection of the public and environment.

The SRSO is also accountable to the organization for incident response as well as limiting any liability or unsafe work practices.


If the SRSO discovers an activity involving ionizing radiation in which health and safety appear to be compromised to an unacceptable level, the SRSO should terminate the unsafe activity immediately.

Travel to other sites required.


About You:

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences Nuclear Medicine, Medical Radiation Technology or equivalent education which includes Radiation Safety Training
  • Canadian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA(R)) Registration or Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) Registration
  • Transport of Dangerous Goods Certification for Ground
  • Minimum of (2) two years experience performing radiation safety duties in a hospital or university research setting required
  • Interpersonal and report writing skills are required when enforcing policy and documenting incidents which could have implications for staff
  • Strong organizational skills and selfmotivation required
  • Ability to work effectively with management and frontline workers as well as deal with government agencies and inspectors.
  • Developing and providing education and training are critical to this role.
  • Emergency Preparedness in radiation accidents both practical and theoretical required
  • Cyclotron knowledge and experience are considered an asset
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Compensation and Incentives:

$ $41.19 Hourly
