Unit/Project Description:

Student Affairs undertakes a lead role in the development of a holistic student experience, beginning in the first year and extending beyond the classroom, which fundamentally supports the transformative learning of students.

This personalized, engaging, and holistic student experience is intended to promote personal growth, support health, self-efficacy, and well-being, and enhance a sense of belonging, inclusive community, and connectedness of all students within the McMaster University community.


Student Affairs


Student Affairs comprises eleven divisions that provide diverse services and programs that support student life and engagement beyond the classroom to enhance students' academic experience.

As partners in learning, Student Affairs units collaborate, communicate, coordinate, and co-create accessible programs and services with colleagues across campus, including Faculty and Program stakeholders.

Dedicated to the success of the whole student, Student Affairs units integrate seamlessly to provide a welcoming and inclusive space for students that supports their well-being and belonging and sets a foundation of support for transformation and growth.

The Student Success Centre (SSC), Student Affairs serves an integral, central role in the development and provision of innovative programs and services to students in the areas of First-Year Experience (including outreach, access, transition, and orientation, financial education and support, and the Archway Program, the full-year First-Year Mentorship Program); Academic & Writing Skills Development; Career Counselling, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Experiential Learning; International Student Services (ISS) and Global Experience; Spiritual Care and Learning; Leadership Development; and Student Community Relations.


Student Success Centre

The Student Success Centre works in strong collaboration with Student Affairs, Faculty, and University partners, and with external community partners through the Office of Community Engagement (OCE).

The vision for the SSC is for all students and alumni to Thrive and realize their academic, professional and personal aspirations.

Job Summary:


Responsible for the development and delivery of programs and services to assist students in areas of transition, skills development, knowledge acquisition, and experiential learning for the purpose of achieving academic success and enhancing the student experience.

Builds strategic alliances with faculty, and staff and the greater community to create a culture of collaboration and partnership in ensuring student success.

Areas of focus include student development with a particular emphasis on the transition process for new students and their families, pre-arrival orientation programs, community engagement and transition support throughout a students first year.

Creates shared institutional support programs for new students by developing collaborative partnerships within the University.


Purpose and Key Functions:


  • Assess students' academic and personal stage of development to inform on appropriate strategies and developmental tasks to promote growth and skill building.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate transition programming for incoming first year students.
  • Support the enrolment management efforts of the University with an emphasis placed on the transition process for new students and their families.
  • Design and deliver workshops and presentations based on research, sound methodology and an understanding of student experiences and needs in response to faculty and student requests.
  • Design and implement evaluation strategies such as surveys, focus groups, and rubrics to measure program outcomes and effectiveness.
  • Develop an effective and efficient program delivery strategy such as student based models, seminars, workshops, and online resources that serve to optimize resources and service capacity.
  • Direct effective marketing and promotion of the program to target students in need of services.
