As a Planning Services Technician 2, you will be the first point of contact for Development, Building, and Business license applications, working in a fast-paced environment. Primary duties include:
  • Perform preliminary reviews of development and building permits by assessing blueprints and documents submitted in person or online.
  • Assist property owners, developers, builders and businesses to determine which applications they need and help them navigate through the permit and licensing process.
  • Conduct bylaw checks to ensure proposals, applications, and Real Property Reports comply with applicable land use bylaw.
  • Interpret and educate customers on current and previous land use bylaw.
  • Review customer business license requests to determine license types in accordance with business license bylaws and to ensure adherence to the land use bylaws.
  • Respond to customer and citizen inquiries, requests, and complaints regarding various bylaws, both in person and over the telephone and web chat.
  • Qualifications
  • A completed 1 year certificate in applied Land Use Planning, Construction, Business, or a related field, plus at least 3 years of related experience working in a development or building and safety department (or a closely related customer service environment), with 1 year as a Planning Services Technician 1 (or a closely related position); OR
  • A completed 2 year diploma in Planning, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field, with at least 1 year of customer service experience with direct public contact; OR
  • A degree in Planning, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Engineering Design and Drafting, or a related field, with at least 1 year of customer service experience with direct public contact.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is an asset.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of land use bylaw and/or business licensing is an asset.
  • Previous experience reading blueprints and a course in blueprint reading will both be considered an asset.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships and partnerships with team members and both internal and external customers.
  • Excellent service skills which demonstrate tact and courtesy when dealing with the public.
  • Working Conditions: Primarily works in a front-counter service environment.
