REPORTING TO:
Director of Care


SUMMARY OF DUTIES:


Reporting to the Director of Care, and\or Administrator, the Assistant Director of Care assists in the directing and organizing of resident care and services according to Extendicare's vision, policy and procedures.

Participates in the Quality Assurance/Improvement Program of the Home to ensure the effective, efficient delivery of a high standard of resident care.

The Assistant Director of Care assists with the effective use of budgeted resources to provide health care within the facility and is an active member of the leadership team.


QUALIFICATIONS:


Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba or Manitoba Registered Psychiatric Nurses or Manitoba or College of the Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba or registration with the College of Social Workers of Manitoba.

Must be knowledgeable in principles and philosophy of long-term care with at least 3 years of supervision experience.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills that develop a positive work and living environment;

Understanding of change management, organizational development with proven success;

Solid understanding of Quality Improvement and Assurance programs


Mentally and physically able to perform duties as outlined which includes ability to maintain regular attendance in addition to work in a very dynamic environment.

Customer-focused attitude, with an emphasis on building and maintaining relationships with residents, their families, team members and the community


Ability to generate sound, creative solutions and new approaches to daily challenges and which maximize the short and long-term goals of the facility.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Assists in the management of the Nursing Department in such a manner as to meet both the health care and financial objectives established for the facility.


Acquire, organize, direct/supervise and develop team members for the effective, efficient provision of health care and services to the residents by modeling behavior in line with Extendicare expectations and values.


Support employee engagement activities within the home through recruitment and retention, mentoring, inspires those to act through leadership, and interpretation the various collective agreements.

Assists with planning, preparing, coordinating and evaluating the effectiveness of orientation programs for all new staff. Consults with department heads to identify staff training needs and plans approaches to deliver programs to meet those needs.

Assists department heads to plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate in-service programs for all staff. Prepares monthly and yearly calendars based on facility needs.


May assume responsibilities and organize for such core clinical service areas such as but not limited to skin and wound program, falls, infection control as required.

Also includes knowledge of Extendicare procedures for emergency preparedness and infection prevention and control practices for facilitation purposes.

Actively participate in the care Residents receive by attending IDTC, family meetings, admission process

Assumes responsibility for the Nursing Department in the absence of the Director of Care. Assumes responsibility for the facility in the absence of the Director of Care and Administrator.


Develops and maintains effective communications and relations with residents, relatives of residents, volunteers and the community at large with respect to nursing home matters.

Ensures concerns are communicated with Administrator/Director of Care or other teams and effectively handled.


Implements the recommendations resulting from Extendicare's Quality Assurance and Improvement Programs with the cooperation of the Director of Care, under the authorization of the Administrator.

Actively communicates between various teams within Extendicare and those working and living within the home by disseminating information and ensuring the right person is contacted to provide a satisfactory outcome


Actively supervises direct reports and those within the workplace to meet or exceed Occupational Health and Safety practices in order to positively impact in our employ.

Participates in research and development activities to further facility operations and care programs as approved by the Administrator/Extendicare.

Performs all duties in accordance with the written policies and procedures of Extendicare, the facility and the Nursing Department.


Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner and maintains work area in a clean, orderly and safe condition.


Adheres to but not limited to "Standards of Employee Conduct," "Commitment to Residents", " Bill of Rights", and "Extendicare Quality Care Standards",, Extendicare Mission, Vision and Values, and Manitoba Health Standards.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
