***The Clinical Scholar role supports JBH's mission, vision, values and strategic directions. The primary function of the role is to provide to provide mentorship to newly graduated nurses to support their transition into the workforce. Types of new nurses include nursing graduates, internationally educated nurses (IENs) and nurses looking to upskill in the areas of Acute Medicine, Inpatient Surgery and ICU. The Clinical Scholar influences and advances nursing practice by utilizing strong leadership skills, effective teaching strategies and successful mentoring and coaching techniques.


The Clinical Scholar collaborates with the Clinical Manager, Professional Practice Educator, Charge Nurse and the Most Responsible or Frontline Nurse to provide and promote ongoing professional development at the bedside to enhance knowledge translation and the integration of best practices (Standards of Care, Policies and procedures, guidelines, clinical protocols etc.) into daily work.

With the goal to influence continuous quality improvement in clinical practice, patient outcomes and the provision of quality patient care.

The roles core accountabilities/deliverables are guided by the mandate of the Ministry of Health, Clinical Scholar Program.

This position will provide real time "at the bedside" leadership, role modelling, teaching, clinical coaching, and mentoring activities to enhance novice nurses knowledge transfer/uptake to achieve quality patient outcomes, empower staff and promote best practice.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Registered Nurse with a minimum of 810 or more years of current or recent (within last 12 months) front line experience with acute medicine or acute surgery or ICU populations.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with a demonstrated commitment to patient safety
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) required
  • Previous experience teaching, working with/preceptoring students and/or novice nursing staff
  • Creative, flexible and work effectively with a diverse group of individuals with a sound understanding of the many different adult learning styles, effective teaching strategies and educational backgrounds
  • Demonstrated change management and problem solving skills
  • Superior interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, including comfort level with providing in the moment reflective feedback
  • Selfdirected and highly motivated individual with a passion for learning and supporting others in the process

ICU populations
  • ACLS and Critical Care Certificate required:

  • Medicine & Inpatient Surgery populations
  • Critical Care 1 or equivalent required to support care of telemetry populations:
  • Good attendance record is required
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning
  • Must be able to work 8 & 12 hour shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends)
