Platform Reporting Relationship:
Programs and Support Services Manager

Complexity and Scope of the Position Reports to the Programs and Support Services Manager. Assists in providing physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual programs to residents. The Activity Aide is also responsible for the completion of all required documentation. This position requires flexibility and good interpersonal skills in working with all members of the health care team. Assists in maintaining a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and other staff members.

All duties are performed in the best interest of the residents and their families, and in accordance with Chartwell's vision, mission and values statements.


Key Activities Resident Relations:

  • Assists in designing, planning, scheduling and implementing activities programs that meet the needs of residents.
  • Assists in the supervision of volunteers and other community groups or agencies that provide programs or services to residents.
  • Develops and maintains good communications with residents and their families and friends, as well as, volunteers, community groups and agencies.
  • Observes and reports any changes in the residents' ability to participate in activities.
  • Responds to resident or family member concerns and ensures appropriate action is taken within decisionmaking authority and/or brings to the attention of the Programs and Support Services Manager

Leadership:

  • N/A Budget & Financial:Makes recommendations with respect to program equipment and supply purchases

Marketing & Occupancy:

  • Effectively communicates and interacts with residents, family members, visitors and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner

Regulatory Compliance:
Conducts duties in accordance with Chartwell policies and procedures, as well as, government regulations, laws and policies.

  • Understands and follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, other staff members and residents. Promptly reports all actual or potentially hazardous situations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of residents' personal information.

Operational & Administrative Systems:

  • Maintains department records as required; including resident activity assessments.
Participates in the on-going evaluation of the program.

Other:
Attends and participates in committees or conferences as required.
Works with and maintains effective communications with all members of the health care team.
Performs other related duties as required.


Qualifications Experience:
Prior experience working with seniors, preferably in a long term care facility


Education:
Graduate of a post-secondary education program related to recreation, or equivalent experience.
Completion of Adjuvant certification program or related educational qualifications.


Skills & Abilities:
Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Varied interests in recreation and leisure activities.
Expresses a positive image and understanding of seniors.
Exhibits enthusiasm.
Understands holistic approach to care. Special RequirementsFrequent and constant standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying is required. Finger and hand dexterity to handle delicate instruments and other equipment. Visual and hearing acuity to detect changes in residents' condition.
Must be able to work knowing that errors may result in serious consequences for residents. Must possess initiative and judgment in recognizing symptoms indicative of residents' adverse reactions to treatments. Must be willing to perform a variety of simple repetitive tasks many of which involve unpleasant conditions.
Work is performed indoors, in well-lighted ventilated rooms. Possibility of sustaining cuts and minor burns from instruments and equipment. May be exposed to communicable disease. Possibility of strains due to moving residents or injury from irrational residents.
Must be prepared to respond to emergency situations.
