The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) seeks one (1) summer law student, whose duties will primarily consist of providing support to SIU counsel.


The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency in Ontario that has jurisdiction over municipal, regional, and provincial police officers.

The SIU, independent of any police service and operating at arm's length from the Ministry of the Attorney General, investigates incidents involving officials where they are implicated in the following cases:


  • The death of a person
  • The serious injury of a person
  • The discharge of a firearm at a person
  • The sexual assault of a person, as reported by the person


The SIU conducts investigations to determine whether there are grounds to charge an official in relation to the incident under review.

What can I expect to do in this role?: The summer law student will assist counsel in all aspects of work, including: legal research, opinions and briefing notes, affidavits, file review related to investigations and in response to various SIU records requests (e.g. made under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Coroners Act, Criminal Code, Rules of Civil Procedure, etc.), policy review and drafting letters. Students may also have the opportunity to attend a criminal trial or coroner's inquest. Duties will also include some administrative support duties.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
