Working for the Department/Faculty


The Natural Resources Analytical Laboratory (NRAL) performs analysis on selected chemical constituents of soil, plant and water samples in support of research and extension activities.

NRAL clients include staff and students from the University of Alberta and other Universities, provincial and federal government agencies, and industry.


Position**Working under the direction of the Analytical Services Laboratory Supervisor, the Laboratory Assistant will support the day-to-day operations of the lab, including sample preparation, analyses of samples using a variety of instruments, data analyses and compilation, within defined standard operating procedures (SOPs).


Duties

  • Perform Laboratory Analyses
- inclusive of sample analyses on different instruments in the lab, data compilation and calculation.

  • Instruments used include
  • ICP-OES, Mars microwave digestion system, CETAC CIMPREP system, and analytical balances
  • Directly conducts analyses by preparing samples, preparing standards, performing sample dilutions as appropriate
  • Prepare laboratory samples for analysis, including drying, grinding, weighing, extraction, and digestion following the SOPs/HA
  • Oversees analyses using the laboratory equipment and ensures that the data generated by the lab are accurate
  • Completes data compilation and associated calculations before forwarding the data to Analytical Services Laboratory Manager for QA/QC
  • General laboratory tasks, including cleaning glassware and bottles, keeping counters and laboratory area clean and tidy, and tasks as required by supervisor.
  • Sort, subsample and label samples; Maintain laboratory records and logs
  • Safely dispose of laboratory waste according to SOPs, complying with all WHMIS and University safety policies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Twoyear diploma in Chemical Technology or equivalent, university degree or 3 years' experience in laboratory analysis.
  • Minimum 1year experience in an environmental analysis lab setting is required.
  • Experience with environmental instrumentation, ICP-OES, Mars microwave digestion system, CETAC CIMMPREP system.
  • Experience in data compilation using Microsoft Excel.
  • A working knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures as well as QA/QC.
  • A working knowledge of laboratory safety, WHMIS.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in environmental sample preparation techniques is strongly desired.
