Position Overview


Reports to the National Network Program Director, Canadian Organoid Network Principal Investigators, Clinical Research Coordinators and Nurses within the Gastrointestinal (GI) unit, specifically the Intestinal Bowel Disease (IBD) Group.

This position works within the framework of the University and Faculty of Medicine Policies and Procedures, as well as within the Laboratory Standards of Practice.


The Research Assistant is responsible for, but not limited to collection, processing and preparation of biospecimens for laboratory analysis, documenting, entering and retrieving data with regards to samples, performing general duties and specific laboratory and database analysis.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Maintenance
  • Sample management of patients involved in clinical trials
  • Liaise with various members of the IBD group regarding various research projects and related samples
  • Maintain and manage various databases
  • Maintain storage facilities (i.e., freezer/fridge temperature, proper processing and handling techniques are followed)
  • Client Services
  • Ensure that proper care in the acquisition and processing of samples and followup of ongoing collection of samples is carried out
  • Communication/Relationships
  • Takes a leadership role in maintaining and organizing various biospecimens for numerous research projects while ensuring that proper protocols and procedures are followed
  • Good relationships are developed and maintained with all stakeholders within the related University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services IBD groups

Qualifications / Requirements:


  • Bachelors degree in science preferred or combination of education and experience
  • Completion of medical laboratory assistant/technician certificate or equivalent
  • At least two years experience in a laboratory assistant position with prior experience handling and managing human specimens preferred
  • Experience in dealing with blood borne pathogens or an ability to
  • Has Hepatitis A/B vaccinations
  • Exhibits dedication and a strong commitment to research ethics and following standardized protocols and detailed instructions regarding the collection, processing, and storage of biospecimens
  • Experience with data collection and computerized systems and in handling and processing biological specimens
  • Ability to handle a large amount of work efficiently and effectively with continual interruptions
  • Data entry and keyboard skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with mínimal supervision as well as in a team environment
  • Physical fitness to be able to stand most of the day if necessary as well as lift packages that may weigh up to 40 pounds
  • Experience with sample and information tracking software an asset (training provided)
  • Knowledge of SQL, InfoPath, SharePoint an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently and within a team environment
