Program Leader, YMCA Healthy Heart
Terms:
Permanent, Part-Time
Location:
Various class locations (Coquitlam, Surrey and Port Moody), as well as possible work from home for virtual class coverage.
Start Date:
As soon as possible.
Hours of Work:
Depending on applicant availability could be anywhere from hours per week (with growth potential).
Shifts:
Various offerings with classes all falling between the hours of 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday.
Rate:
$25.00 per hour
Reports To:
Program Supervisor, YMCA Healthy Heart
The YMCA Healthy Heart Program is a medically-managed, community-based cardiac rehabilitation and maintenance exercise program.
Since the COVID pandemic the YMCA Healthy Heart program has been offering a mix of fully virtual exercise classes on Zoom, as well as Hybrid programs (which offer participants both one virtual, and one in-person, exercise class per week).
Nature and Scope:
The YMCA Healthy Heart Program Leader will report to the YMCA Healthy Heart Supervisor and will work collaboratively with other staff, volunteers and participants.
The Program Leader is responsible for program delivery, customer service, and the health and safety of participants in the classes in which they work.
The Program Leader works closely with the Program Supervisors, and Exercise Leaders to support the overall delivery of the program.
Major Responsibilities:
- Lead and/or oversee high quality exercise classes for individuals with known heart disease or other chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and congestive heart failure in a group exercise environment
- Assist class supervisor with medical case management including medical and safety monitoring of participants during classes, and providing individual exercise prescription and education to participants
- Complete orientation sessions and monthly phone call checkins with participants as required providing advice, education and encouragement
- Report any updates regarding participant's medication changes and medical status and submit incident reports as necessary to the Program Supervisor
- Ensure the safety of all participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards, policies and procedures and ensuring they are adhered to by all program participants
- Work with program staff to respond to any emergencies and provide First Aid as needed/possible
- Attend staff meetings and complete YMCA and program training as required
- May be offered additional hours to also assist with the administrative function of the program including phoning prospective participants, preparing medical files, booking appointments, faxing doctor's offices, providing customer service, etc.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) Certification from the American College Sport Medicine (ACSM) or the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP)
- Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology or Human Kinetics
- BCAK Practicing Membership an asset
- Valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C & AED certificate (can be obtained prior to starting)
- Current Group Fitness Certificate and Group Exercise experience an asset
- Cardiac rehabilitation experience and experience working with older adults and/or individuals with chronic disease preferred
- Good team player with strong customer service, relationshipbuilding and communication skills
