    Position Summary


    The position of Lab Technician plays a critical role in supporting the operations of an asphalt laboratory. This position involves conducting various laboratory tests, analyzing data, and providing accurate and reliable results to support the quality and performance of the product line developed and tested. The Lab Technician will work closely with the lab's technical and HSE team and assist in maintaining a safe and efficient laboratory environment.

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    • Conduct laboratory tests: Perform a variety of tests on various asphalt products, following established procedures and standards. These tests may include penetration testing, softening point determination, viscosity measurements, PG testing, etc. Adherence to precise methodologies for consistent and accurate results will be required.
    • Data collection and analysis: Record and analyze test data, paying close attention to detail and accuracy. Utilize laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and other software tools to manage data, generate reports, and track results. Collaborate with engineers and other team members to interpret findings and communicate results effectively.
    • Equipment operation and maintenance: Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments specific to paving grade asphalt cement testing. This may include penetrometers, viscometers, ovens, aging ovens, and other relevant equipment. Calibrate and troubleshoot equipment as needed, ensuring optimal performance.
    • Sample preparation: Prepare asphalt cement samples for testing, following prescribed procedures and specifications. This may involve heating, cooling, mixing, and other sample preparation techniques. Adhere to meticulous protocols to maintain the integrity of the samples.
    • Quality control: Implement and adhere to quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment, including proper storage and labeling of samples and materials. Identify and report any deviations or irregularities promptly.
    • Safety compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines within the laboratory, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Identify and report any safety hazards or incidents promptly, and actively contribute to maintaining a safe working environment.
    • Documentation and reporting: Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of tests performed, methodologies used, and results obtained. Prepare clear and concise reports summarizing findings, observations, and any deviations from expected outcomes. Ensure all documentation is complete and readily accessible.
    • Collaboration and teamwork: Collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, and other team members to support ongoing research and development projects. Assist in troubleshooting and problem-solving activities, actively contributing to the continuous improvement of laboratory processes and procedures.

    Required Qualifications

    • A college degree or diploma in engineering or sciences is considered an asset but not required.
    • Previous experience working in a laboratory or a similar materials testing environment is preferred.
    • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and data analysis software.
    • Ability to follow written procedures and work with meticulous attention to detail.
    • Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members and present findings.
    • Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and complying with safety regulations.
    • French/English bilinguals is an asset.
