Technical Specialist, Milling - Full Time (Permanent Position)

General Accountabilities
Assists the Manager, Milling, in the overall management and operation of Cereals Canada's milling facilities.

Performs milling demonstrations in Cereals Canada in-house programs and presents milling related topics to different organizations and/or Board of Directors meetings.

Actively participates in the milling part of Cereals Canada research activities or collaboration with different organizations.

Provides expertise in areas related to milling and fractionation of both wheat and other grains with an emphasis on customer technical service activities.


Specific Accountabilities

1. Milling operations

  • Receives, handles, and stores wheat and other grains at Cereals Canada facility in bulk or in bags of up to 1 ton or more in weight. Coordinates storage of bulk wheat/grains in offsite warehouses.
  • Conducts pilot and laboratory milling activities (with or without assistance) of wheat and other grains for demonstrations, fee for service requests, research projects, harvest assessment and special projects.
  • Packs products and byproducts produced during pilot milling weighing up to 40 kgs.
  • Performs and demonstrates to participants milling production quality control using objective methods such as digital imaging technology for optimizing flour and semolina refinement and yields.
  • Ships wheat, grain or milled products to requesting parties.
  • Provides general housekeeping for milling and pulse processing areas.
  • Prepares and/or updates the milling schedule for all activities in the mill and pulse processing areas.
  • Assists the manager in training newly hired staff in the milling department.

2. Maintenance activities

  • Performs preventative and scheduled maintenance on equipment in the milling and pulse processing areas and ensures maintenance records for all equipment are updated regularly.
  • Coordinates and/or assists with the repairs and maintenance of mill equipment and other technical areas including annual maintenance that require third party services.
  • Assists with equipment installations in the milling and pulse facility areas as well as in other processing facilities.

3. Data and inventory management

  • Compiles data and maintains an inventory of milled products from wheat and other grains.
  • Monitors and advises the manager of wheat inventory status on a regular basis.
  • Actively contributes and participates in data monitoring and sample tracking system.
  • Conducts data analysis and provides feedback to the manager that will be useful in completion of a project report or in developing a solution to issues or problems in milling operations.
  • Monitors consumable inventories in the milling department and prepares purchase orders to replenish consumables.

4. Technical support (In-house programs)

  • Prepares presentations and presents on topics related to milling technology to program participants.
  • Explains Cereals Canada's pilot mill process flow and relates it to commercial milling to program participants.
  • Responds to inquiries for information on milling.
  • Coleads or chairs programs as required.

5. Technical support (Outgoing missions)

  • Participates in international missions such as investigative, technical, and new crop missions as a support to the manager.
  • Prepares data and draft reports after participating in international missions in collaboration with other travelers.
  • Provides technical support to existing and potential domestic and international customers.

6. Specialized responsibilities

  • Assists the manager in preparing activity summaries of milling activities for the operations report for Board of Directors meetings.
  • Serves as a resource to organizations within the value chain, including various government agencies, private sector organizations and research institutions, on matters related to wheat and pulse milling/processing technology.
  • Undertakes special projects including enhancement of instructional capabilities in milling technology.
  • Actively participates in applied research projects.
  • Prepares reports of investigative studies and presents research findings to interested parties which could include scientific and technical conferences/meetings or internal meetings.
  • Presents milling related technical information in StaffTalks and/or Board of Directors meetings.
  • Liaises and participates in technical activities with professional associations such as the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM).
