Description

We're looking for an experienced, passionate, organized, quality-driven, and motivated Managing Editor to lead our Capital Daily publication in Victoria, BC.


This is a full-time opportunity where the Managing Editor will lead a team to produce innovative, community-driven, and thought-provoking journalism that will grow and engage an audience.

The editor will be able to produce content that provides meaningful value to residents of the local community that ranges from daily news updates to community profiles, and longform investigative features.


The Managing Editor will lead a team that includes newsletter editors, reporters, and an investigative reporter in creating engaging, hyper-local content for the daily newsletter, a weekly members-only newsletter, the website, and social media.


The Managing Editor will also be accountable to support the publication's growth, engagement, and overall success by reviewing metrics, executing new tactics and monitoring growth.

The editor will review newsletter metrics such as open and click-through rates, website analytics, and overall audience engagement on all platforms to ensure Capital Daily is connecting with its audience and providing the community-focused content they are looking for.

The editor will also assist in creating content, and campaigns for Capital Daily's paid membership program, as well as taking part in and hosting Capital Daily events to connect with readers and members, all while spreading the word to the community not yet subscribed.

This is a remote position based in Victoria, BC._**
You have:
  • A ton of writing and editing experience in an editorial/newsroom environment with a print or digital publication
  • Proven experience as a leader in a newsroom, managing and editing complex reporting projects
  • Strong and diverse knowledge of content relevant to growing communities, established community and editorial relationships, and a track record of success writing and editing with online publications
  • Knowledge of Greater Victoria and the South Island inside and out and have an understanding of the local news landscape
  • A love of newsletters, and having written them before is a plus
  • A passion for engaging readers and connecting with them, and them to one another, to build community and loyalty
  • An ability to critically analyze, contextualize, and question information and opinions—and know the difference between them
  • An awareness of who your audience is, what they want to hear, where they'll be seeking the information, why they'll want to engage and when to tell them the story. You know how to write in a way that gets readers to the end of the story
  • A strong understanding of, and commitment to, journalistic standards and ethics and the moral underpinnings of those ethics
  • A team player mentality. Each member of our team has the same goal, and working together is integral to achieving it
  • A growth mindset, with a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • A meticulous attention to detail

In this role you'll have the opportunity to:


  • Brainstorm and deliver hyper-local, timely original content. The ability to identify and produce relevant content in a community news-focused environment is a must, while also considering ideas for other types of content to be included in the newsletter, such as contests, job boards, events, etc.

Lead the planning for our long
- and short-term content calendar to keep track of what's being published, as well as in daily story meetings to help determine what topics will be covered each day, documenting editorial deliverables daily, weekly and monthly via the editorial calendar.

Be the example of an informed + engaged citizen:attend community events, be in the know when it comes to local news + be a leader in civic development of your region.

Publicly represent the brand and be a champion for the brand's success and following, operating as a role model of the company's core values.

Review data to make informed editorial decisions. Review audience engagement and performance metrics, share insights with the team and utilize the data to help guide the editorial direction and optimization of future newsletters.

Cross-functional collaboration. Collaborate with internal teams such as marketing and memberships, to help bring projects such as large events, membership campaigns, and promotion of large editorial features to fruition.
