Job Summary


Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio, and has a team of approximately 140 full time employees and 1000+ student/part-time employees.

It services over 60,000 students through recreational programming, 26 varsity teams, and 13 competitive clubs along with thousands of members of the UBC community.

Annually, the department hosts large scale, mass spectator events such as concerts, Homecoming, Storm the Wall etc. that have over 5000 spectators/participants in attendance.

This position is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of comprehensive patron, guest, and participant safety and risk mitigation programs for the department of Athletics and Recreation.


Working in partnership with senior University administration, departmental unit leads, the Manager, Safety and Risk Mitigation position provides supervision, advice, and leadership for the development and implementation of safety and risk mitigation approaches for departmental patron and participant safety programs, large scale event activities, and various programming areas within the A&R landscape.

This position is also responsible for the implementation and development of training programs, policies, and guidelines related to safety and risk issues.


The incumbent is also responsible for identifying initiatives that directly support the safety and risk mitigation objectives and goals of the department and for consulting and liaising with regulatory agencies, relevant authorities, staff regarding issues related to patron and participant risk mitigation and safety.

This position will require evening and weekend work as well as, on site presence at events.

Organizational Status

Reports directly to the Director of Administration and Strategic Initiatives.

This position works closely with the senior personnel in the department of Athletics and Recreation and collaborates with other University units and external organizations as required.

The incumbent coordinates with other UBC departments to share best practices.


Work Performed- Manages and establishes clear and consistent health and safety practices, risk mitigation and provides guidance for program and event operations.- Designs, implements, and oversees the Athletics and Recreation department's patron and participant focused safety, risk management, and emergency response programs.- Reviews, assesses and develops patron and participant focused safety and risk management policies and protocols; makes recommendations and implements modifications and improvements.- Provides real-time direct on-site support and response of safety & risk protocols and systems for high risk, mass attendance events including but not limited to concerts, Day of the Longboat, Homecoming, Storm the Wall, Winter Classic, and UBC Triathlon.

Oversees the immediate medical response at identified high risk, mass attendance events.- Provides immediate advisement and response in critical instances related to patron and participant health and safety.- Reviews, assess and develops risk assessments, policies and procedures pertaining to student-athlete, staff, support staff, program participate, etc.
