Job Summary

The Communications & Engagement Coordinator creates and implements engagement and communications strategies and initiatives as well as manages projects that directly impact faculty and staff experiences at UBC.

Collaborating with colleagues in the VP, Human Resources (VPHR) portfolio, and across the institution, the role is an integral part of a team that ensures engagement and communication strategies and initiatives reinforce the University's mission, values, and culture and position UBC as a first-choice place to work, research and teach.


Organizational Status

Reporting to the Workplace Engagement & Communications Specialist, the Communications & Engagement Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of communications and engagement projects and initiatives for the VPHR portfolio.

The Coordinator works collaboratively as part of the Workplace Strategy and Engagement team within UBC Human Resources.

The role also works in partnership with communications professionals and diverse stakeholders and colleagues across UBC, as well as external consultants and service providers.


Work Performed

  • Contributes to the creation of, and implements, communication and engagement strategies, projects and initiatives that directly impact faculty and staff experiences at UBC, including Focus on People (UBC's people strategy), the recruitment experience, the orientation & onboarding experience, learning, recognition, and how people create connections across the University.
  • Implements tactics for strategies and plans that communicate and advance UBC's employer story (brand) internally and externally.
  • Implements UBCwide reputational communications and marketing projects and initiatives within the VPHR portfolio, including national employer awards programs and internal employee recognition programs.
  • Executes communications plans, campaigns, and tactics for UBC's employee experience initiatives throughout the employee lifecycle.
  • Executes communications plans, campaigns, and tactics for UBC's learning and talent development strategies and initiatives.
  • Responsible for the editorial content and delivery of a variety of webbased and print communication vehicles for identified audiences.
  • Develops communication materials for outreach activities and special events.
  • Researches, writes and/or coordinates web and social content for UBC audiences, including, but not limited to people profiles, announcements, educational and informative blog posts and stories.
  • Creates reports and presentations for VPHRled strategies (such as Focus on People) for multiple audiences including UBC's Board of Governors, the UBC Executive, and the broader UBC community.
  • Determines workflow and manages projects, including establishing timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Contributes to HR's communication operations, as well as the ongoing improvements and evolution of communication best practices.
  • Coordinates onbrand photoshoots with stakeholders to build an inclusive photography library representative of our diverse workplaces.
  • Collaborates closely with the UBC Brand & Marketing, Internal Communications, ISC Change and Communications, and other communications colleagues in Faculties and VP portfolios to ensure alignment and deliver results that positively influence the staff and faculty experience while promoting and safeguarding the University's employer brand and reputation.
  • Identifies and monitors communication and engagement metrics, analytics and feedback to ensure objectives are achieved.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position plays an important role in attaining the goals that have been committed to the University community in UBC's Focus on People framework and the University's strategic plan.

Failure to lead the development and implementation engagement and communications strategies that align with the UBC's current and future aspirations could have a detrimental effect on attracting and retaining outstanding faculty and staff and furthermore could impact the reputation of UBC.

This role exercises initiative and judgment in carrying tasks through to completion, and must demonstrate tact and discretion. Works independently and as a team member within established guidelines and standards.
