40 hrs/week - March 1- November 15

$18.00/hr


Job description:


Reporting to the Chair of the Board the Cemetery Manager is responsible for the day to day functioning of the cemetery and supervision of staff and volunteers of one to five people.

The staff and volunteers consist of the Manager and Grounds Keeper.

The desire is for the Manager to live on site in a remodelled 2 bedroom home at reduced rent.


Responsibilities:


Cemetery Grounds

  • In summer, maintaining the grassed areas to lawn like appearance in open areas and around monuments and trees.
  • Maintaining roadways and paths free of debris and properly graded.
  • Trees and fences maintained in safe and tidy conditions.
  • Shrubs and bushes planted by the lot owners are their responsibility; if they become unsightly and the owner does not maintain, the cemetery staff and volunteers, as time permits, may tidy up. Specifics of planting or placing bushes, flowers and decorations are covered in the Rules and Regulations.
  • Safety and security of public and staff as well as volunteers are the Manager's responsibility at all times. The Manager will act on his / her own authority to forestall immediate dangers. Major or persistent issues must be brought to the attention of the Board of Trustees.
  • As burial plots / lots are sold, the Manager will make recommendations to the Board of Trustees for development of additional burial area and supervise the work to be done.
  • A vault is maintained for the storage of bodies during winter, a storage shed, workshop, and house belong to the cemetery.

Funerals

  • In the event of a death, a Funeral Director is generally the first contact with the Cemetery Manager. The Manager will open and order, get family name and location of burial lot. If a lot is to be purchased the name of purchaser is to be obtained for the order including if it is a casket / vault or cremation burial with the date and time of the planned funeral.
  • If a lot is required, family members generally arrange this and the Manager assists by showing available areas and provides pricing and conditions concerning each area or location.
  • The day before the funeral the Manager decides whether the grave is to be dug by hand or machine. If by machine, the Manager will contact the operator and make arrangements. The Manager is to have the grave area measured and staked and the sod removed and stored. The Manager will supervise digging and preparations of the gravecorrect depth and dimensions and placing of planks to ensure safety of all concerned.

Sale of Plots / Lots / Columbarium Niches

  • When approached by a client interested in purchasing a lot or columbarium niche, every assistance will be provided. The price, location, limitations on stones or markers, use of corner posts and perpetual care are explained. The client is encouraged to view the areas available and to make their choice. The Manager will accompany the client to available plot areas.
  • Once a decision is made, the Manager prepares a provisional sales form.

Business Procedures

  • The Superintendent will be familiar with normal office practices.
  • The Superintendent will work with the Cemetery Bookkeeper with regards to any financials.
