Job Summary
The Arts Student Engagement Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing effective student engagement strategies in support of a culture of learning, leadership, involvement and service for all students in the Faculty of Arts at UBC.
This role provides expertise and guidance around the development and management of student engagement programming for the Arts first year experience, as well as for students in the upper years of their undergraduate degree.
The incumbent manages the planning, delivery, and review of Arts student engagement programming and initiatives, manages a team of student employees and volunteers, and is responsible for linking Arts and broader UBC strategic student plans into the Arts student engagement framework.
The Arts Student Engagement Officer is instrumental in the implementation of a comprehensive Arts student engagement framework, and works in close partnership with other Arts staff and faculty, student organizations (Arts Undergraduate Society/Alma Mater Society), alumni, and community partners to deliver student engagement programming and initiatives across Arts.
The role also evaluates student engagement programming across the faculty, identifies opportunities for Arts to respond to emerging student engagement needs, and develops new pilot initiatives that emerge from gaps identified from Arts students and community.
The incumbent requires the ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.Organizational Status
The Arts Student Engagement Officer is supervised by the Associate Director, at the Centre for Student Development and Leadership, and receives direction from the Associate Dean, Students in the Arts, Dean's Office.
The incumbent will work in collaboration with Arts student service departments (such as Arts Academic Advising, Arts Co-op), Academic units and programs across the faculty as well as student organizations and staff at the Centre for Student Development and Leadership.
The position will supervise and train student staff and volunteers and provide student engagement expertise and guidance to staff and faculty members across the Faculty of Arts.
Work Performed
Manages the ongoing development and implementation of strategies to create a culture of engagement, leadership, involvement, learning, and service for students across the Faculty of Arts.- Develops, assesses, and implements engagement strategies in support of student development and leadership in Arts.- Manages and informs an Arts student experience framework that is in alignment with approaches and priorities identified by the Faculty of Arts and the UBC Student Strategic Plan.- Oversees the research, design, delivery, and assessment of Arts student engagement learning resources, programs, initiatives, and pathways; these include transition and orientation programs such as Imagine UBC, the Arts Peer Academic Coaching program, student leader development, and related initiatives embedded in core student engagement activities in Arts.- Provides expert advice to Arts students, faculty, staff, and community partners on development and participation in student engagement initiatives; collaborates with partners across the faculty of Arts to develop customized, Arts-specific events and programs for students and alumni.- Researches and develops new approaches and resources for Arts student community engagement and community partnerships, including facilitating events and programming that connect students with alumni and community.- Participates on cross-campus student engagement committees and communities of practice across the university.
