Position Summary
The Communications Strategist will develop comprehensive communications strategies for internal and external communication channels and lead communications projects.

The position will be focused on standardizing operations for greater consistency and creating clear operating procedures to ensure a consistent voice and brand identity is implemented across the organization.


Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and map organization communications to support the strategic initiatives of CCOC, including website, social media, blog, newsletter, and multi-media.
  • Create clear guidelines, operating procedures, and branding plan across departments to strengthen CCOC's consistency and brand identity.
  • Measure and report on the effectiveness of communication activities and mediums.
  • Conduct website needs assessment and supervise website redevelopment, hiring and coordinating with third party contractors, as required.
  • Support the creation and refinement of standard corporate key messaging and branding.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate collaboration and ensure consistent branding and messaging.
  • Hire and coordinate thirdparty contractors including branding and marketing consultants, designers, web developers, to support the creation of new materials.
  • Provide creative direction to the TCE team and create and review content for various channels.
  • Develop print communications materials (Newsletters, brochures, signage, presentation material, advertisements, social media content)
  • Update CCOC's media relations protocols, and develop plan for media engagement and crisis response.
  • Ensure all communications materials meet federal and provincial standards and exceed accessibility requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the TCE Director and/or the Executive Director.


This position supports the work of Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation, Centretown Citizens Housing Co-operative and Cahdco (Centretown Affordable Housing Development Corporation).


Education and Experience

  • Completion of a fouryear postsecondary degree in Commerce, Communications, Public Relations or Marketing, Journalism or related field.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements;
  • Minimum of 3 years of related work experience
  • Experience with plain language writing and copy editing;
  • Advanced ability to use website management, content management systems, analytics programs (WordPress, MailChimp, HootSuite);
  • Advanced ability to use Adobe Creative Suite and/or other design software.
  • Intermediate ability to use Microsoft Office Suite
  • Advanced verbal and written communication in English
  • Ability to write and edit communication in French is considered an asset but not required
  • Experience in the affordable housing sector an asset

Supervision and Decision-Making

  • Decisionmaking forms an extremely large part of the role and will impact a major function of the organization and corporate objectives. Procedures and precedents are generally not well established. Considerable judgement and complex interpretation are required for developing solutions.
  • Provides regular guidance to other employees and has peer coordinating responsibilities.
  • Works under general direction, must be able to think independently to come to solutions
  • Moderate impact if errors are made
  • Occasional use of confidential information

Working Environment

  • Interaction with internal colleagues involves planning and coordinating the efforts of others.
  • Interaction with external contacts requires tact and courtesy, primarily in exchanging information.
  • Normal office environment; periods of light physical activity (for example, intermittent sitting, standing or reading).
  • Some degree of physical skill and coordination required (for example, basic keyboarding).
  • Comfortable physical working environment.
  • The incumbent may be exposed to moderate stress.
  • Occasional work outside business hours for events or board & committee meetings.
