Position Summary


Under the direction of the Grand Chief's Office, the Communications Specialist will be responsible for a wide range of communication functions by providing the following key activities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development of various communication strategies (external, internal, social media, and media relations).
  • Draft media releases, advisories and/or responses as requested.
  • Develop and publish approved social media content across social media channels.
  • Manage the website, social media presence (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok).
  • Assist with the coordination of press conferences, events, and media workshops as it relates to the GCO.
  • Attend community events and capture photos and video as requested.
  • Create, produce, and edit videos of activities for distribution.
  • Respond to requests from the media and assist with scheduling interviews as requested.
  • Draft press releases, statements as requested.
  • Assist with the development of GCO workshop and program materials (posters, brochures, social media graphics, etc.).
  • Maintain Photo and Video Library.
  • Maintain information resources, track/inventory of popup banners, brochures, and other collateral materials, and be responsible for sharing them with staff.
  • Develop and implement monthly newsletter.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • A degree or diploma in Journalism, Public Relations, Creative Communications or equivalent experience and abilities.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience and excellent journalism, and public relations skills with strong multitasking ability.
  • Ability to write clearly and creatively within tight deadlines, and adaptable to changing priorities and projects.
  • Ability to write in a variety of styles (straight news, promotion, advertising, human interest etc).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively as a part of an interdisciplinary team of professionals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with mínimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of First Nation issues related to the child welfare system and health services.
  • Experience working with and in First Nations.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office software, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Proficient use of Adobe Creative Cloud software, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, etc.
  • Experience working with online platforms including WordPress, Canva, MailChimp, SurveyMonkey, WooCommerce, Moodle.
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Zoom, Slack, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Able to work flexible hours and travel upon request.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver's license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Clear Child Abuse Checks.
