LGBTQ+ Support Worker:

DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society Surrey, BC $24.48 to $28.52 per hour

The LGBTQ+( lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer) 1-1 Support Worker will be serving marginalized newcomers, inclusive of youth.

The LGBTQ+ 1-1 Support Worker will provide individualised advice, support, information and guidance to address the unique and complex challenges faced by sexual and gender diverse newcomers.

The LGBTQ+ Support Worker will conduct customised Information and Orientation sessions for individuals, families, and groups on settlement related topic as well as facilitate the Together Now peer support group.

The LGBTQ+ 1-1 Support Worker will be knowledgeable on topics related to the intersectionality of gender identity, sexual orientation and settlement.

The LGBTQ+1-1 Support Worker will conduct outreach and foster community engagement in order to raise awareness of the needs of LGBTQ+ newcomers.

The LGBTQ+ Support Worker will assist LGBTQ+ newcomers to build peer and community supports.


This part time (23 hour) position for a dedicated individual who is committed to using a safe space, strength-based approach to support LGBTQ+ newcomers navigate the complex experience of intersectional identities and empower them towards self efficacy.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Work collaboratively with RISE Case Specialist and Newcomer Information Support Workers to provide individualized advice, support, information and guidance to LGBTQ+ newcomers to help address the unique and complex challenges faced by sexual and gender diverse newcomers;
  • Facilitate a client centered and led peer support group "Together Now"
  • Conduct customised Information and Orientation sessions (individual, family, and group) to promote skills and capacity building;
  • Provide outreachbased services in a variety of settings such as, in home visits or in community spaces;
  • Develop and provide a range of services (individual, peer driven, family, group) according to client needs;
  • Work collaboratively with RISE Case Specialists and Newcomer and Information Support Workers and their clients s as well as crosssector service provider partners (i.e., health services providers, other community organisations) in developing individualised and effective, strengthsbased, antiracist/antioppressive and culturally competent service plans;
  • Conduct outreach to LGBTQ+ newcomers and service providers within Surrey, Langley and North Delta and social services agencies within the Lower Mainland to facilitate referrals for individual, group and family services;
  • Provide service coordination, liaison, and service planning with involved internal and community resources/partners; refer clients to Together Now Peer Support Group or other LGBTQ+ focused programs within community;
  • Attend relevant committees and working groups to inform LGBTQ+ newcomer integration and best practice approaches;
  • Develop and facilitate interactive workshops and accessible knowledge exchange activities for DIVERSEcity staff as well as service providers on the topics of harm reduction, antihomophobia, antitransphobia as well as accessible service provision to, and capacity building for, LGBTQ+ newcomers;
  • Advocate on behalf of LGBTQ+ newcomers to address gaps in service identified through the work;
  • Manage client files and ensure that data entry and written documentation for each file is consistently up to date;
  • Ethically research the needs of LGBTQ+ newcomers in the Lower mainland;
  • Bachelor's Degree in related human/social service field;
  • One (1) year recent experience working with LGBTQ+ newcomers, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
  • A strengthsbased, harm reduction, antiracism/antioppression, trans positive and inclusive engagement philosophy of service provision and a belief in the self determination of newcomers;
  • Knowledgeable of the needs of LGBTQ+ (individual, family, group) and an ability to provide service in a, nontraditional, LGBTQ+ friendly, accessible, culturally competent and community led and based ways that are responsive to the needs of sexual and gender diverse newcomers;
  • Ability to speak/read/write English at a professional level;
  • Ability to speak/read/write (Arabic or Swahili) at a professional level an asset;
  • Demonstrated recent experience in providing individualised advice, support, information and guidance to LGBTQ+ newcomers related to settlement and integration;
  • Experience developing and leading interactive workshops and curricula focused activities on topics of harm reduction, antihomophobia, antitransphobia as well as accessible service provision to, and capacity building for, LGBTQ+ newcomers
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, in order to meet client needs;
  • A capacity to build and nurture working relationships with colleagues, referral sources and partner agencies;
  • A selfstarter with an ability to work independen
