Part-time Peer Support Coordinator


Halifax Association for Community Living (HACL) is a not-for-profit, charitable organization serving adults, youth, and children with special needs and their families in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

HACL believes that all people should be accepted as responsible, contributing members of their family and society and offers people-centered and holistic services.

HACL works and advocates to ensure that persons with special needs are included in our community.

The Inclusion Services Program (ISP) is HACL's key community outreach program.

The program helps people understand all the elements they need to consider in order to make life transitions as smooth as possible.

People with special needs and their families are supported through casework, education, connections with community resources, and through HACL resources and workshops.


Position Summary
The Peer Support Coordinator oversees all aspects of HACL's Circle of Support program.

The program recognizes that people with intellectual disabilities and their family caregivers have talent, insight, skills, and experiences to share.

HACL wants to harness these skills to assist and empower people with intellectual disabilities and their families to support each other through transitions and challenges.

Through the Circle of Support, people with lived experience will support their peers through advice, support, empathy, resources, and hope.


  • Liaise with community groups and expert resources to create a training program and resources
  • Deliver peer support training sessions
  • Monitor peer mentors' progress and adapt strategies or provide support/training as needed to ensure success
  • Assist in facilitating group peer support meetings
  • Ensure the program environment is appropriate and safe
  • Plan and deliver community information sessions
  • Assists the Program Director with ongoing program planning, evaluation and quality improvement activities
  • Establish shortterm and longterm goals, in collaboration with the Program Director
  • Keep the Program Director informed of all pertinent information regarding the Circle of Support
  • Ensure that all program goals are met
  • Identify and organize necessary resources (venues, materials, etc.) to enhance services
  • Plan the monthly calendar of peer support groups/training/workshops, and submit to the Program Director two weeks prior to the start of the month
  • Adhere to HACL's code of ethics, policies, procedures and stated aims / core purpose Additional duties:
  • Manage Social Media platforms, create posters and respond to online request
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Requirements

  • You are resourceful, creative and flexible
  • You are able to work independently and as part of a team
  • You are willing to work flexible hours
  • You have knowledge of social media platforms including Meta Business suites
  • You have an understanding of Canva or other creative platforms
