- To ensure knowledge of all instrumentation is up to date.
- To be competent to operate the laboratory equipment to deliver the required analytical service.
- To perform manual laboratory investigations including the use of liquid handling devices to safely process biological specimens.
- To technically validate appropriate results according to departmental SOPs.
- To ensure the timely and efficient provision of routine or special analytical services
- To supervise trainee, MLA, and locum staff to ensure that work is carried out in line with Standing Operational Procedures and or Departmental policy.
- To review SOP's and inform senior staff of discrepancies or possible updates.
- To ensure the quality control tests are conducted and meet required analytical standards.
- Where appropriate, implement a remedial action plan in line with SOPs under the guidance of a senior staff member.
- To ensure daily maintenance of equipment is carried out to schedule and that all maintenance is documented.
- To assist in maintaining adequate stock of all reagents and consumables, through accurate record keeping and reporting to senior staff.
- To ensure that all logbooks / forms relating to calibrators, controls and reagents are maintained.
- To receive and handle samples in accordance with SOPs within laboratory and reception areas.
- To enter data accurately onto laboratory and hospital information systems in accordance with local procedures
- To participate in the on-call rota which requires staff to work alone and unsupervised for extended periods dealing with all investigative requests and reporting results. To be able to carry out basic troubleshooting of the equipment whilst on call. Please note that participation in the on-call service is voluntary but expected.
- To actively participate in annual appraisal.
- To participate in continuous training to maintain the services within each section.
- To participate in new developments and the introduction of new methodology as required.
- To be able to deal with issues and advice regarding the biochemistry service either by phone or directly as required.
- Waste disposal: Disposing of all biological, sharps and domestic waste appropriately in accordance with SOP's and instructions.
- To support the validation of new equipment prior to service introduction.
- To implement cost improvement programmes as directed by senior staff.
- To support senior staff in providing training for junior staff within the department
- To ensure that professional standards are maintained.
- To ensure that personal training and development is kept up to date.
- To assist in ensuring the department is centred on patient care and the patient pathway.
- To be aware of the clinical implications of the service they provide
- To be aware of and comply with all relevant Trust policies.
- To ensure all incidents are reported according to departmental policy.
- To assist in gathering data for departmental audits
- HCPC registration and evidence of ongoing professional development
- Diploma or Degree level study (and above)
- Must be willing to work shifts including nights and weekends
- Minimum of 2 years working as a specialist BMS in biochemistry, 5+ years desirable
