Guided by our values of compassion, excellence, and courage, and through our strategic roadmap, Plan to 2030 , we are creating a new kind of health care - defined not by illness, but by the health and well-being of people and communities.

Position Summary

  • Provide core occupational hygiene and safety services to support health and safety programs and policies including but not limited to occupational hygiene investigations, hazard identification risk assessments, air sampling, noise monitoring, spill and emergency response, selection and use of personal protective equipment, occupational health and safety training, etc.
  • Develop, communicate, implement, and sustain occupational health and safety programs, audit and evaluate programs, and use audit results to revise existing programs to ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Provide support in the management and maintenance of construction and contractor health and safety policies including participation in activity permit review and approvals, construction site hoarding approvals and audits, project site decommissioning and pre-occupancy inspections, contractor occupational health and safety orientation, and other related activities as required.
  • Proactively identify workplace hazards such as biological, chemical, and physical agents; evaluate the potential for staff exposure to these workplace hazards and assess the risk to staff and others within the organization; assess the need for interventions to comply with occupational health, safety or environmental laws; and determine control measures to eliminate or mitigate the risk to employees and the organization.
  • Review staff, professional staff, learner and volunteer health and safety incidents and conduct investigations to determine root cause(s) and recommend corrective actions to ensure effective and sustainable controls.
  • Provide ongoing education, advice, consultation and support to leadership and individuals as it relates to all operational and continuous improvement matters involving health and safety.
  • Develop and deliver end user documentation and health and safety training as required.
  • Monitor and analyze trends and keep apprised of new or revised legislation to maintain and enhance current plans, policies and procedures; anticipate the impact of changes on the organization and promote legislative compliance and best practices.
  • Track and report on key metrics for monitoring work and safety performance.
  • Improve operational efficiency by identifying and recommending new or improved policies and procedures as they relate to health and safety.
  • Report to legislative bodies as required and represent THP in dealing with government representatives and enforcement agencies such as the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, Skills and Development, Ministry of Health & Long Term Care, Transport Canada, Public Health Ontario, and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. Coordinate the Hospital's response to any orders or requirements received.
  • Perform other duties related to the position as required.
